p.5 #1 · Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD

Pricing at $1299 is as I expected. Unfortunately that is without a tripod foot, though they say the optional accessory will be Arca compatible.

For me, the VXD motors/expected faster AF and 50-100mm focal range make the Tamron more appealing than the Sigma on paper and worth the higher price. We'll see if image quality is similar; I haven't seen direct comparisons but the early videos of the Tamron seem good.

I don't know, the 150-500mm is most likely a superior lens and available for 1230€ currently, that's considerably less.
And the Sigma 100-400 can be found for 900€, thats almost 40% cheaper...

As you said, you don't know that and neither do I. We'll have to wait for some reviews and hopefully some comparisons to the GM and DN. For me, 150-500 is completely out of this discussion as it's too heavy for what I want to use it for. If I were to buy a long tele, from what I've seen 200-600 is clearly superior (at the cost of size & weight)...
Sigma is the reason Tamron went with this design, as they want to have something (extra) to charge their customers (extra) for. It seems to be a recurring theme in the latest Tamron releases. Those who don't see value in 50mm/macro or the slight size gain, will still choose between the DN and the GM...

Yeah I want to see some reviews. The 50-100 range does interest me. It’s not fast but I don’t need it to be. And Tamron’s VXD does typically outperform the stepping motors in Sigma’s DN lenses.

That said, I’m still surprised they priced it this much higher than the Sigma. They have a huge price ceiling since the GM is astronomical at retail, but still.

Yes, the price is curious...I hope it means that it outperforms the Sigma. Both are interesting to me, but starting at 50mm doesn't matter much to me.

I still don't really get the choice from Tamron and Samyang to give samples to channels with low production values and subscription numbers. Just give it to big channels that do high-quality reviews where people can actually form an opinion.
What's the release schedule for this lens? That's been quite confusing.

Agreed, but maybe Tamron wants to help the small guys too ...
The release date is somewhen around 22-25 September from what I've heard.

It's 1500e in Sweden, around 100e less than the 150-500. (The Sigma 100-400 is 1120e so a significant difference here too). It'll be interesting to see some reviews. (I'm not interested. Make time to process more photos should be prioritized up severely )

With Sony raising its prices, some of that may be baked into these new lens releases from Tamron. We might see this from other manufacturers as well.

It is an unusual move - but hopefully means we get more honest reviews eventually from people who don’t have to play nice to keep getting stuff early from Tamron.

Geez, the tripod foot (A035TM) costs $129. That puts the cost of this lens over the 150-500.

I can't see how this lens is going to be worth $300-400 more than the Sigma 100-400. I own both the Sigma and the Sony. Gaining 50mm at the short end has no appeal to me personally. While the macro capability is neat, I'm not comfortable doing a modest 2:1 macro with a lens weighing 2.5 lbs--more with the collar.

If it focuses faster than the Sigma, might be worth consideration. I think Tamron has it priced at least $200 too high versus the competition, however.

Here in Australia a couple of retailers have just listed the Tamron 100-400 at a whopping $2399 Au, umm no thanks 😏

I can live without Tamron’s 50-100mm from a slow f4.5 (though its faster focus would have been beneficial). So I just ordered (17% off on EBay with free delivery) a new Sigma 100-400 (with latest firmware) for $995 Au, and the Sigma TS-111 tripod bracket for $123 AU. If it doesn’t perform to my expectations, then I’ll send it back (free returns via EBay Plus) 😉

With the money I saved, I also ordered on EBay a new Samyang 24mm f1.8 for $551 Au.

Hey JayBr, I think you will find the Sigma very satisfactory. I auditioned a few by accident as Amazon kept sending only in a Tyvek plastic envelope with no protection. I couldn't take a chance on that. Yet, by doing so, I found that all are quite sharp. I kept the best one and it is as sharp as my Sony version although can't take the Sony 1.4 teleconverter.

Now, about that collar. Since, like me, you like to save some money, you can find a good collar at half the price, assuming you have the same choices down under. So if not too late to return Sigma's overpriced collar here are a couple to look for:

Haoge and iShoot. I auditioned two brands and greatly preferred the Haoge. Here in the U.S. it is $50 and has free returns if not for you.

See you when I finally get to visit Koala country!

By the way, here is my review of that collar:

I own both the Sony 100-400mm zoom and the Sigma version of this great focal length. Having done detailed comparison tests, the Sigma is also absolutely superb. I’m a well-known pro and if you are still considering which lens to buy, consider this:

A few diss the Sigma because it doesn’t come with a tripod collar. However, at 40% the cost of the Sony I’m actually glad it doesn’t. As great as the Sony 100-400 is, the collar does not include an Arca-type quick release, a mistake on Sony’s part. Enter the Sigma TS-11A collar, ridiculously priced at $130. NOPE!

This Haoge LMR-SM140S is just as good and just five ounces. The Arca quick release plate is superior to Sony’s version, too.

Thanks for the suggestion and info onthebeam,
I had previously looked at other 3rd party tripod collars/brackets, but decided to get the original Sigma because I got 17% off the price. Ultimately, I think the genuine version will add a little to the resale value in the future.

Note: I just checked the Au prices of the Haoge and iShoot collars on EBay, and they’re between $75-$80 Australian. So I only paid about $45 Au more for the Sigma.

Believe it or not I'm one of those people who see an advantage to the 50-100 range for my uses over my Tamron 70-300. For me it'll get utilized for our daughters outdoor field sports (track & cross country) as well as water skiing, and whale watching. In all scenarios I find the need for taking casual portraits with limited space to move back with my 70-300, and I only carry one lens to these things on my A9.

On the other end, I have some motorsports events planned next year where 300mm isn't going to cut it, was thinking the 150-500 but this might make more sense for more of my uses, sacrificing 100mm on the long end.

Also- it's always annoyed me the 70-300 doesn't have a zoom lock.

Waiting on more reviews but I'm thinking about it.

Of course be aware that first reviewers to get the lens (before general availability) are more likely to review it as good. See

Funny how the truth comes out when a new version or upgrade gets announced. Suddenly there are issues never mentioned in the initial reviews.

That said I really want this lens.
