A new leak according to Digicame-info.com.
Could this have decent IQ and be small? Form factor looks similar to the 70-180/2.8 with a smallish 67mm front filter?
TAMRON 50-400mm F / 4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD
/ Sony E mount
/ Full size compatible
/ model A067
Looks really interesting. Maybe a bit shorter than the Sony 100-400, a half stop slower, but starting at 50mm on the wide end is pretty useful. Glad to see VXD motors driving this. I see space/markings for a tripod collar too.
Need to adjust thinking. 50-400 range sets of alarm bells for too much range and not enough IQ.
Sigma's 60-600 has plenty of IQ and so does the Tamron 28-200.
So this will more likely be another very good IQ lens.
I'm sure it will be available. This is just not the era for decide Monday, expect to have it Wednesday. I had to wait 4 months for a Sony 1.4TC. I survived.

I wonder if it will compete with Sigma's 100-400. That's the one I've been waiting to get, but if the Tamron is about the same size and better...
Exciting!
It seems the upcoming/rumoured Tamron 50-400mm will have linear focus motors instead of stepper motors, that the Sigma 100-400mm has got. Linear motors, Tamron call it VXD, are faster than stepper motors.
I’ve seen tests that indicate that the existing Tamron 150-500mm has more accurate AF than the Sigma 100-400mm. The Tamron 150-500mm has got VXD motors as well, but is also heavy at about 1750 grams. The 50-400mm should be lighter and weigh about 1000-1100 grams, is my guess.
AF accuracy can depend on more factors than the AF motors, for instance lens firmware and other electronics in the lens and communication with the camera. My guess is that linear motors, VXD in Tamron speak is an advantage.
That's great to hear. I'm wary of such a large range, since I only really need 100mm to 400mm. But as others have already said, the extra range doesn't necessarily mean lower IQ.
I like the sound of even faster focusing. From what I've read the Sigma is quite decent, but better is always better. I hope you're right re: weight as well.
I guess the last question will be price. If I can afford it, it could really be a good option for my long lens.
That's a heck of a range for landscape stuff too, all in one neat package.
Very curious about this lens - would love for it to be competitive with the Sony 100-400GM. That's a big task, but Tamron has really been knocking it out of the park recently.
I like that they put VC (OSS) on it, which is unfortunately missing on their 70-180/2.8
Its a rather slow lens though, 50/4.5 is not bright at all.
It could be an interesting option at the right price if its at least optically similar 100-400GM stopped down to 6.3
On the wide end 50/4.5 sounds slow, but on the long end, a 400/6.3 is only a tad slower than the usual 400/5.6 options
I wonder if the optical formula is similar to the apsc 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD, with the wide part chopped off to cover a FF image circle. That lens was also f/4.5 at 49mm...

Unfortunately, all these intriguing third party zooms are just reminders of how annoying Sony's "No TC for you" policy is...
This bugs the heck out of me too. Even just allowing their own TC's to be used with 3rd party lenses would be nice, but nope. I hope in time they change this policy.
