p.1 #1 · Pacific Impression - Oregon

Sitting in the blue hour, after sunset, mesmerized by immense waves and fog rolling in, I was compelled to go with a longer exposure.

Thank you for looking. I hope everyone is doing well.

Techie Stuff:

Sony A7R2
Canon 70-200@70mm
No filtration
A single 30 second exposure
800 ISO
f/8

Processing:

A single shot, starting as a Linear Profile (you can make and save one for your camera in just seconds using the free software - ADOBE DNG PROFILE EDITOR). There are 2 Free Videos on my YouTube page about the massive benefits, and How To Make liner profiles in just seconds.

By the way, all Linear Profiles need about a 1.8 Gamma Curve - brightening - and a moderate generic S-Curve applied to them so that they respond much more naturally like they should.

This can be easily done by simply steepening the Point Curve in Lightroom/Camera Raw, and then adding about 50pts to the main panel "Contrast" and then save those settings as a New Preset. Easy as cake and really helps. They will not be as flat or lifeless anymore. I find quite a few photographers on my workshops not entirely happy about how Linear Profiles respond, and when they do this very necessary adjustment (that Raw files were intended to have - and need) boom, they respond awesome! I also find that many never go back to any of Adobe profiles, considering the HUGE jump in quality they get. And we also do not have to battle Adobes notoriously damaging baked in adjustments. In other words, Raw now REALLY becomes Raw and YOU get to do all the adjusting in the highest bit depth, lossless space - minus Adobes hidden adjusting. 👏🏻

Also, here conservative adjustments were used on the image using Adobes New, Raw Layer on Raw Layer Lossless Workflow (in Raw Layers in Photoshop) for the highest bit depth and true lossless editing.

I try to avoid using Adjustment Layers or Smart Object Layers as much as possible - which are NOT lossless - as far as I can take an image. Especially if you make enlargements, this highest quality workflow can make a huge difference!

Lastly, when an image is important to me, and I think I may print it, sell it... In Lightroom/Camera Raw, I NEVER do not choose "Enhance - Raw Details" (I always use it). It is simply a much better demosaicing, with better detail, much higher color fidelity and lower overall noise.

And conversely, I NEVER choose "Enhance - Super Rez"! It does far more damage than good.

Hope it helps someone. 😊

This is beautiful.

You say "No filtration." How did you get 30 seconds of exposure at ISO 800 without using a ND filter?

Thanks. I missed the "blue hour" mention in your opening line.

Another lovely image from you, Mark. As always, besides the great images, I appreciate your sharing technical info.

Beautiful Image!!! Please share with the Sony forum to illustrate that its not the lens, or the body, but the person behind the camera that produces beautiful images.

You are always showing us what can be created with a camera, Mark! The 30 second exposure really worked to keep the Pacific mist in the air. What a mood creator! A really wonderful image!!!
