My friend and I were watching the weather like a hawk for this Eclipse. She had rented a telephoto lens and we jokingly said the reason for the nearly 100% cloud forecast on Eclipse night was because she rented some fancy gear!
Sunday we were checking the forecast all over the place. We were willing to drive wherever if it meant a better chance of clear skies. We eventually landed on a reservoir in the Catskills. But, as we arrived there was fog EVERYWHERE. We quickly made a backup plan and hail married over to a hill where her aunt lives, thinking it would be above the clouds.
Well, it kind of was. Haze kept moving in and out the whole night, and it was a doozy to capture. I ended up focusing on the cool landscape illuminated by lights nearby. This image is a 2 shot blend. One for the overall shot, and one for the details in the Moon. Taken back to back, no crazy compositing here, think of it like an HDR! Nikon Z6 + Z 50 1.8 S. Both shots ISO 800, f/2.8. Moon shot 0.8 seconds, overall shot 20 seconds.
Excellent!
Just so you know. That's what amature astronomers go through. Just the thought of taking a scope out will cause immediate and thick cloud cover!

Wow Daniel, I love the end result! Difficult conditions, and that added so much magical atmosphere. Worthy of a print on the wall!
Many thanks Ross! I def want to print this one big, but I do think I need to tighten up the edit just a hair.

Fog is a funny thing. There's often a fine line between "too much, ruined!" and "fog, beautiful!" I think it adds a to here.
Haha I appreciate that Dan, I totally know what you mean. The pic I took just after this had wayyyy too much fog, you couldn't even see the stars.

The composite blend is a bit too obvious in my opinion but I love the composition and the aura of the fog.
Thanks for the feedback Paul. I do agree the trailing stars make it a little bit blendy. I can see if I can try to tighten that up, especially before printing.
