So was there anything I didn't like about the A7C? Not really, was a great camera. EVF and lack of custom dials didn't bother me for how I used it. I just couldn't resist the current prices on A9's.

I feel like the A7C suffer from quite a bit of 'first generation syndrome'. I'm sure that Sony will pick up the pace with a second generation release. Hopefully they'll also release a lens similar to the one glued to the RX1R II to complement the form factor.
The compact full frame market has so much potential, but Sony hasn't quite gotten it figured out yet.

For someone that for a time owned an RX1RII for travel, I would agree 100%. I just found the 35mm FL too limiting. Considering Sony as managed to put one of their (at the time) high-MP sensors in something the size of the RX1RII, as well as create a camera like the A7C, I'd be all over them combining that knowledge and creating an A7CR with the 61MP sensor and a better viewfinder. I could replace my A7R4 with it now that I have an A9 for action/sports needs.

I have read, though I don't know how reliably, that the 35mm lens that is mounted on the RX1RII benefited from a design that is only possible on a permanently mounted lens. The suggestion was that the lens extends much closer to the sensor than is feasible on a body that will use interchangeable lenses.

^^I had read/seen the same regarding the 35mm f/2 on the RX1RII. Sony has released some small primes as of late, as well as the older 35mm f/2.8, which I have and don't use a ton, but hold onto because I was lucky to pick up a really good copy of one. All are f/2.8 though, and that 35 f/2 on the RX1R2 seems to be a really special lens.

I've kept my original A9 for shooting festival event action (esp. Japanese summer festivals including dance performances) but all those events have been cancelled until this year due to Covid-19 restrictions. Hopefully those events will be possible again from this summer.
...
I use these cameras primarily with electronic shutter in silent mode (fp only has electronic shutter), and I mostly shoot static scenes with my A7C and with the Sigma....

Hope I did the quote thing right.

Juha, your reply caught my attention because I am considering this camera body and I also use an A9, but also I saw you are in Tokyo, and I have an unrelated question re the electronic shutter. Friends and relatives have expressed surprise at my silent camera and phone shutters when I visit them in Japan and said that they cannot buy such cameras and phones there (because of upskirt issues). Is that so?

And I surely miss Japan and the festivals there.

It's true that Japanese mobile phone and smartphone cameras traditionally have a shutter sound that can't be turned off because of that problem but that doesn't extend to bigger stand-alone cameras like Sony Alpha models. My Japanese models of A9, A7C and Sigma fp can all be shot silently without any forced shutter sound. My Xperia PRO-I (Japan "SIM free" smartphone model) can also have the shutter sound turned off, which is rather unusual for a Japan market phone. I think pretty much all the phones sold through mobile operators will have a forced shutter sound on their cameras at least when used with a Japanese operator's SIM. There is no strict law about that but it's been a kind of old defacto standard rule in Japan market. I'm not sure if small digital cameras also adhere to that old rule nowadays. I haven't owned any dedicated small pocket camera since the 90's when I used some pocket film cameras.
