Simply outstanding - were you using AF or a MF or a combo to get these? I have had limited success with 500 + 2x AF with BIF of R5. 100–500 seems better.
Thank you! These were all shot using AF. I don't recall but I think I was using AEAF which I use 95% of the time.
When clicking on this bird standing or walking in the swamp, I noticed that the AEAF seemed to have a very hard time finding the eye on these Bitterns for some reason. I simply use "Spot" AF BBF when this happens. But oddly enough the AEAF had no trouble locking on and sticking to this bird when it was in flight. The 2x obviously doesn't help matters any, but since installing FW 1.5.2, this combo is back to working fantastic again for me.
Congrats. I've heard them and shot them ( once) but never seen them fly. There are supposed to be 3 at our local spot, but pretty hard to actually find them.

Thanks Dave. I have had AF issues with R5 + 500 II (+/- 1.4x / 2x III) with fast moving birds like wood peckers in flight. I think I have the latest FW, but will confirm and try again. Good to know that it may be situational / skill rather than the combo. I have started to try to use MF pumping options that those appear to work a bit better.
Btw, in case you are interested, the IQ @2000mm is not that bad either by stacking EF and RF 2x. you will need to rig up an adapter and even then its rather nuts.
