I heard some birds I didn't recognize up in the trees in the front yard yesterday, and the Merlin app identified them as Golden-crowned Kinglets. I grabbed my Z9 and 800mm f6.3 and tried to get a shot of them, but unfortunately, they were very high up in the tree, and eventually flew away without ever coming down lower, so all the shots I did get have then very small in the frame. These images are pretty heavy crops, but you can sure see how these little birds get their name.

Winter migrants are starting to arrive at El Rio Preserve, Marana, AZ. The former frisbee golf course flooded about a decade ago and the city of Marana embraced the mistake and is slowly turning it into a birding paradise for the Tucson area. Here is a small selection from the last couple of weeks.

I finally had a chance to test out my Z8 and the 800 PF lens. I bought into the Z system months ago and then life got in the way. These were all taken on or near Vancouver Island about a week ago. The bear was quite far away, so the image is cropped quite a bit. ISO for the surfers was 3200 with a shutter speed of 1/1250. I never imaged surfers before, but this was a lot of fun!
While my focus technique is still a work in progress, I am thrilled at the lightness of the lens (I'm 72) and its performance. I also have the 400 and 600 PF lenses and will start to use them in the coming months.
