some of my first shots with the 800 6.3
gotta say, I am way more impressed than I expected to be
coming from the R5 + RF 600 F4 + RF 1.4x combo at 840mm f5.6 and costing around $20K, the Z9 + Z 800 f6.3 blows the other combo out of the water for around $10K.
lighter weight, shorter, half the price, and very similar if not better IQ

Two from the beaver pond... At 800mm compression of water vapor at the interface between the are and surface has a real negative impact on overall image contrast. It's great to have this focal length, but it is not without it's challenges.

Awesome images Bruce, especially like the second one!! I just love that 800pf!

Sequence of a Welcome Swallow hawking a midge off the surface of water. I am finding the AF speed of this lens to be excellent. I also have some sequences of Swallows coming directly at me and the lens will keep up throughout the sequence. I don't shoot anything smaller and faster than that!

Here's a example of the potential of the Z9+800pf+2xTC at "maximum reach" when shooting video. Impressive results IMO:
This is something I've yet to test (TCs on the 800 PF), but I am excited to do so.
While on the Canon system I was a fiend for maximum focal length.
I was able to take the R5 + RF 800 F11 + 2x + 1.4x for 2240mm F32 prior to any cropping or "DX" equivalent.
I'm still working on theories on how to stack extenders on the Nikon gear, as I haven't seen anyone do it yet.
But yes, very impressive quality. Especially for video. I've found that video suffers much less than photos when it comes to these ridiculous focal lengths

I'd think it'd be better to use a good spotting scope and digiscoping kit instead of TC on a 800mm lens
Well there are a lot of variables when pushing the performance envelope, but one critical area that cannot be compromised is the size of the objective, which in the case of the 800pf is 140mm -- much larger than you'll find on any spotting scope. There's no substitute for light gathering when you start cranking up the magnification.
