Another trip to the local wetlands to practice. The flying birds were a rescue; messed up my metering settings, but they are what they are! At least the Cedar Waxwings were posing!

Got busy at work so not much time to go out in the recent days. The encounter with a family of 5 GHO made my day today though. Two were buried in the canopy but three allowed some decent photos. It was nice to run into them randomly and not have people crowding / disturbing them. Made my day.

One more from yesterday - the four I posted so far were at 1/250s ss - it was dark in the trees. This one is 1/100s (handheld). I'm pretty impressed with the VR.

Are you sure you got the swallow with Nikon? I heard that was impossible 😂. Nice set btw!
Thanks! Swallows with the 800 have been a little tough, I wont lie, but that particular picture was also in a very bad spot to try to get swallows. Its like a managed impoundment with tons of dead trees in the water and dark woods as the background.
So far this swallow season I have either had bad luck with action (they are flying too high, water levels covering the grasses where the midges usually breed, not in the same location as last year, etc) or just awful weather on the weekends when I can shoot, that I havent really had too many chances to give the 800mm a test with them.

1/
1/1600s, F.3, iso 1600, tried Z8 with 120 FPS jpg. The woodpecker was just too fast and with 20 FPS raw shooting, I only got may be 1-2 pictures with the woodpecker in the frame as it left its nest at best. The bird is way way too fast for me and there was no way to tell if it would go left, right or around toward to back of the tree and once came almost straight ahead.
I am finding auto capture great for capturing images for shy birds, and fledglings are typically very shy… I am unlikely to have caught this shot if it had sensed me at the camera. This image was at around the shortest focus limit of the 800 pf lens.

Great Pics... i have one Question ?
would you please tell us/me, what nikon had done with your 800mmPF?
is it now beter in sharpness, did they turn the firmware back ?
Are you referring to my post regarding problem with 800PF?
I posted an update awhile back but may be you missed it.
Basically, I sent both my 800PF and Z9 back to Nikon.
As it turned out, my 800PF was perfectly fine. However, somehow
my Z9's sensor alignment was off. It was ok while I was in Chile but I did
not use it for 2 weeks until I went on the next trip when I noticed the problem
so I am not sure how it happened.
The last pictures of I posted was with 800PF and Z8 and it worked perfectly fine.
