A little more from today. I think I can get used to this lens. Hopefully, there will be more action from this wildlife refuge as the season progresses. For now, the Grackle will keep me company.

Just wondering why this would be considered a delete for you? To me, it's a perfectly well composed, sharp, and technically artistic.
Thank you! ;-)
Because the bird was looking away and the view was of it's back side.
I was shooting anything I could find in an effort to put the lens through it's paces - so to speak.

Thanks for the reply. Just want to learn what other bird photographers are looking for in their images. I don't have much experience in bird shooting and just excited to get the bird in the frame and capture the image.

Wifey & I set out Saturday morning to see what birds we might find. It was horribly windy, so my hopes were pretty low. I was pleasantly surprised.

Great images, thanks for sharing.
I'm an owner of the "other" 800, the 5.6, that I got refurbished, and the new 800 is heading to my local shop; I'm doing an exchange and it will be a straight up trade.
Very excited to get it and try it out; as great as the current one is, to be able to shoot hand holding will be nice, using the tripod in lower light situations. The images look quite sharp which is really encouraging.
Doing a Texas trip this time next year from San Antonio to Corpus Christi to Galveston and hope to get painted buntings, my favorite birds, among others. Loving the posts so far on this thread, hope to add it in a few days.

Can you please guys stop posting awesome images with the 800mmpf. I am getting aggravated with my lack or reach and waiting for this gem 😆
Tell me about it. These images are awesome!
I sold my long glass the second it was announced. I am now stuck on hold waiting for the 800 like rest of us. In the painful wait i bought a pair of binoculars to sooth myself

Same here. I sold my 600mm fl. Longest telephoto I have right now is my 100-400z . The 100-400z will be a good combo with the 800mmpf with its incredible short mfd ( 400mm 2.8S would be even better 😅 )I am trying to stay reasonable

Hey Rick,
You will be delighted with the 800pf especially if you were using the 600E with the 1.4xTC often. I do not find the f6.3 to be a problem at all. In fact, I found that for most of my shooting(perched birds), the VR/IBIS is so good that I can shoot at a much slower SS and get a lower ISO than the 600E(+1.4TC). The combination of the reduction in weight and the better balance of the 800pf allows me to hold it more steady and with the VR and IBIS working, I can get the SS to be stupid low for an 800mm where the older lens will never allows me to go.
I never really like shooting BIF. But with this lens, it allows me to hold it up and track the bird much easier and steadier.

A little surprise this morning on my balcony. Usually the scarly-breasted munias are pretty skittish but this morning when I opened my door to my tiny balcony, they actually stayed long enough for me to photograph them at my height
This was shot pretty much at near minimum focusing distance, f6.3, iso 560, 1/80s. I initially shot at much higher SS but the bird cooperated so I kept reducing shutterspeed to lower iso. Got to love VR/Ibis on Z9 and 800PF The photo was cropped down to about 26mp before resized.
๊Unfortunately they did not stay long enough for me to put on 400/2.8S +TC to compare
