Wow!.. I love all of that juicy detail. You're making this lens really sing. Your work really illustrates how sharp the 800PF can be...

Thanks Bruce. I'm a detail guy. I love tight shots to show that detail. I back out a bit for prints for sale but for my taste, and posting online i will crop a bit.
The 800pf is so sharp, i sold my beloved 500PF exactly a week after getting the 800PF

Same story with me, sold the 500PF shortly after seeing how the 800PF performs. Prior to receiving mine, I’d look at other peoples posted photos, which due to forum compression the shots just looked “ok”, so was thinking I’d keep the 500 since I knew how stellar it was. Once I got the files from the 800 into LR and could see the detail and clarity for myself, I was blown away, and it put all doubts to bed. This lens is truly every bit as good as they say it is, and I’m so happy with it! (and I’m not saying that because of confirmation bias either, it really is stunning )

I got a surprise call today, totally unexpected. My camera store called me to say they had a Nikon Z800mm in and if I still wanted it. I was on the pre-order list since april 2022 and in january was told there still was no outlook for delivery and I would get my next update beginning of april.
Sp apparently Nikon is slowly catching up with demand for the 800PF, which is good news for those still waiting.
I eventually settled on a Sony 600GM, which is a tremendous lens, but still felt a mild sense of regret having to turn down the offer. The 500PF+D500 was such a great combo and it has given me a soft spot for Nikon's imaging when it comes to wildlife/birding.

Third outing. Some more distant subjects this time. The owls were hunting pretty far away from the trail and I was grateful for the extra reach. Getting a bit better at handling this lens too.

Congratulations to you whose 800mm pf lenses have arrived. The images look great!
No sign of any shipments here in NZ and no indication as to when one may arrive. I have therefore decided to pick up an A1 and 200-600 with 1.4x to try for a while. If I like it I will sell the Z kit. Its the last thing I want to do frankly but there is a limit to how long one can wait at my age!
If you want an 800MM Z lens there is one for sale at a store in the Netherlands. I realise its far from your location, but it's a trustworthy secondhand store, that offers a warranty. If your not inhibited by import taxes it may be worth a shot.

I wish you luck and hope that you adapt to the Sony system without any issues. It was not he 800PF that almost drove me to that place, but the lack of a long-lens zoom option like the Sony 200-600G. While I never made the leap, i did consider it. The introduction of the 100-400 and 400 f4.5 brought me back into the fold.
I enter the follow point with the acknowledgement that I have a Nikon bias... if you have not made the switch yet, there are some legitimate options that will bring your optical quality close to the 800PF and keep your kit light. You are probably aware of these... 500PF + TC14iii or 400 f4.5 w/ a pair of Z converters... while neither will be as good as the 800 PF, they are about equal (if not sharper) than what you will get with the Sony 200-600. On the other hand, the Sony offers you a very high quality zoom and the lighter camera body...

If it is not too late, rumor over here is that Nikon may finally released 200-600 at the same time with Z8. Nikon may announce this at CP+ which is not far away. However, there were so many rumors of launch date for both products in the past that I got bit tired of waiting (for Z8) as well. At least over here, 800PF seemed to showed up a little more readily than last year. I think Nikon is finally catching up to a certain extent.

It doesn't matter what the depth of field is, what matters is how far outside of the depth of field the BG is. I have images taken at 400mm f/16 where the BG is complete mush. I.e. the difference in subject distance and BG distance matters much more than aperture.
Cropping doesn't affect this... if you crop the depth of field decreases in the final image; doesn't matter if it's done with crop factor, DX mode, or in post.
I think we’re saying the same thing, but you can’t disaggregate DoF from aperture manipulation versus background distance. At 400mm f/2.8, with a subject at 25 meters, your DoF is 0.65 meters, and your DoF beyond your focus point is 0.33 meters. At f/16, your DoF is 3.7 meters, and your DoF beyond your subject is 1.99 meters. So, your subject can be approximately 7x closer to the background when shooting at f/2.8 than at f/16. This is precisely why people are willing to pay so much superteles with large apertures.

So in my opinion, Nikon isn't likely catching up with the 800PF, the more likely scenario is the Nikon had more successful batches of crystals for the PF elements lately. That can seriously change from batch to batch and they don't know how a batch turns out to 7-9 months and they start producing the elements.
Also some preorder pressure may have been relieved with people cancelling the 800PF when the 600f4 tc was announced.
With a Nikon rep last summer saying orders then being placed NPS or not, the wait time was minimum 18 months for the 800PF. Just this past 3 or 4 weeks the first noon NPS orders from April area being filled in quite certain there are more open stock orders for the 800PF then there were NPS orders

Last week, my local store had one for sale. I don't know if it is still there or not though.
I think it was the first time one of the 3 supertele primes arrived that was not already reserved.
On the other hand, 800PF is much less popular thant both 400TC and 600TC over here.
