Yes, super job George! Perfect!
Question: Do you know how the beach-nesting shorebirds in the Southeast are protected from say.... dogs? Have not been there for years.
Robert
Thanks very much!!
Hmm I don't know for sure but where I live in Myrtle Beach dogs are allowed in certain spots but not in nesting areas. Maybe that's the same elsewhere? The photos I took today were in NY where I used to live and went for many years and no dogs are allowed in that area.

Here's another set from yesterday! Z9, 800pf and a couple with the TC1.4X
Amazing again, how are you finding the lens in general, the TC1.4 looks like it might be pushing things a bit, regardless it is still 1120mm! crazy. I am interested to see how the 800 will get on with less than ideal light.
These are just incredible images and equally incredible subjects. Thank you for taking the time to post

Thank you! So far I think it works well! The images with the converter were all hand held and not in ideal light either so I am pretty psyched about the combo. This is really the first time Ive tried the 1.4 on it out in the field. When I get back home I'll try it more but the way I used it here were for very little babies(mostly) to stay back far enough away yet get a decent shot so I'm happy!! The lens by itself is excellent!!

Thanks George, I am hoping with VR that some slow shutter speed hand held shots can be made! it is the only hope for the UK weather, not so much sunshine normally The bare lens looks super sharp, will 800mm be too long for some occasions? I guess, but it sure is going to be hard to resist this lens
The level of images which we get to view at no extra cost, from yourself and others here, is really quite something special. On top of that we can see first hand what new kit is capable of, very grateful, please keep the images coming.

Thanks so much!! I have a special place in my heart for the UK! Was there in 2008 for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards in London and sat with Danny Green who was from there for an award also! We had a blast!!
Oh and yes the 800 is too much lens sometimes but when it's not it's awesome! !

It comes as no surprise that you were at the 2008 Awards in London, and in great company by all accounts! We have some great wildlife in the UK but the conditions often lend themselves more to f2.8 lenses than f6.3 but I am hopeful that VR and IBIS will help me compensate, since my next lens will likely be this aperture at the long end.
Notice that Steve Perry recently did a question and answer on the 800, and was nothing but good or excellent feedback. I guess this lens and a 200-600 or 100-400 might be all you need, 800 might be all I can justify for the time being
I once made the mistake of showing up at Bombay Hook during summer and remember trying to do birding with blood dripping down my face and hands. I didn't even bring any bug repellent. I was there end of April this year and no bugs then.

I also live on the Delmarva peninsula and can attest to the flying insect issue!
Here are some products I use. Took a few years to find something that really worked for me, but I realize everyone is different so your mileage may vary!
As photographers though, AVOID DEET at all costs. It will destroy your gear - don't ask me how I know that...
Picaridin works great - active ingredient in the Proven lotion ^
For an all-natural plant-based option, check out the Repel lemon eucalyptus ^
Also, fun fact. There are over 50 species of mosquitoes found in Maryland... A ranger at Assateague Island National Seashore told me a few years ago they have documented 23 species in Assateague alone in one summer... Not all of them bite, but the ones that do will find you!

Great info, I’ll get some of the Proven lotion on order before my next coastal excursion. It was those green headed beasts that were drawing blood. It was the same the week before at Island Beach SP in New Jersey. I might try Brigantine later in the week for some shorebirds with the 800PF.

This is a lovely set George, as was the previous one. The chicks are precious and brilliantly captured. :-)

I wanted to send out big "Thank you" to rick2906 for for posting info about the Zemlin lens caps for various big glass - including the 800PF. I received one of these for my 800PF over the weekend and it's quite nice, fits firm & solid and can be easily installed / removed with the hood i n place.
Having seen it in person, I think I'll get one for my 600F4 as well.
This will make me feel a whole lot better packing the lens for air travel.

I just posted about them last week as well. I just got one for my 400mm fl. So much better than that stupid bag it comes with.
