Congratulations to Ross Martin for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 14 votes - View Previous Winners

When I think of what the American Southwest is known for, it’s the grand vistas and icons that likely stand out for most folks. I do enjoy the big scenics, but at the same time I find there is a softer, more nuanced mood to the Southwest that I very much enjoy experiencing and trying to capture. Here is a collection of rocks, badlands, trees, and quiet small sections of canyons in Utah and Arizona from my winter trip that I hope you enjoy.

Thanks for looking, everyone!

Best,
Ross

Hey Ross, this is a beautiful collection. You have captured the quieter moods and details of the region incredibly. Your work also shows what a diverse area it is for a creative artist.

I like the isolated subjects, all clearly from the southwest but only showing parts. As a set, they make a greater statement.
I didn't know there was a "soft side" to the SW, except for maybe the clouds. Nothing feels soft when I trip and fall, .

Nice set of photo Ross! I really lie the contrasting colors in that first one. I always enjoy a good black and white too. Nice work.

Ross, you have trained your eyes to look at your subject beyond just icons locations. I always enjoy viewing your images. As usual top notch work. Thanks for sharing. Keep your weekly installments going 👍🏻

These are masterful. Well done! The first two are my favorites for the colors and textures.

Thanks much Gordon! I do like how a set of images can often paint a richer portrait of an area.
Haha, yes I hear you about the SW not being soft 😆. Perhaps subtle would be a better word in the title. But I do experience a softness or gentleness when out there in solitude pursuing the quieter details 😍 That’s probably more related to my personality than anything else.

Cheers,
Ross

Beautiful photos all! And yes, there is a softer side to AZ and UT. If I go to the Grand Canyon it's early in the morning before everyone gets there or gets up. And the local trails as well.

Something the PBS show Outside Beyond The Lens talks about. There is more than the tourist filled parks if you look!
