p.2 #1 · Surprising Small Things This Time of Year

Lovely images, Birdie.

I think there may be a temperature difference between your winter and mine.

We have had several days of a few degree below freezing, rising above by mid morning. Even so, we have been amazed at some cultivated yellow flowers still going strong. I have just been out ,photographing frost patterns on my car's windscreen and those flowers are drooping a bit but look ready to revive in an hour or two.

Wonderful set. TFS.

The composition of #3 really works for me. It gives the impression that the little critter is gazing over the precipice of a gorge and taking it all in.

Boy oh boy Roberta these shots are amazing. It opens up a whole world of beauty that the average person does not know exists. Your backgrounds and colors amazing. These would be a great spot for a self printed book for school children to show them the beauty of the insect world. Well done.

Dave

Thank you so much Dave for the kind words. Macro and the small things are so fascinating.

Always a pleasure to view your work Birdie!

My only .02: In the last frame the depth of field is too shallow. Do not be afraid to stop a lens down to get a little more depth. Focus on the proboscis and while keeping it in focus twist the wrist that you use to hold the camera to lay the area of acceptable focus over the subject's face. The end result is a "magic angle" that creates the illusion that there is a lot of depth. That is how I "cheat" to get the depth in my single frame macro

John,
Thank you so much for the tip, it is greatly appreciated and I am definitely going to practice it. I doubt I will ever come close to what you achieve, but will keep trying.
There were clouds moving in and out , so the only thing I can think is the sun was temporarily blocked plus my position may have blocked some light. These were all natural light .

Beautiful photos.
In my area of Prescott, AZ I saw a baby grasshopper climbing the side of the house. I was buzzed by a couple of bees out by a local lake. The hummingbird has made an appearance in my backyard (I put the feeder out every morning now). I saw, sadly a dead, Gopher Snake on another trail.

And I live at mile high altitude with low temps in the teens to low 20's at night. And it doesn't warm up until mid afternoon into the 50's.

Yes, there definitely is more insect activity. I am seeing honey bees as well. We can temperature swings of 40 degrees with the temps reaching high seventies during the day and dropping to high 30’s low 40’s at night.

Hello Harold. Yes I do believe we are a bit warmer here. Our normal range in Dec is lows 7c to highs of 18c.
However this year, we were having lows of 16c to highs of 26c. Plus our rain fall is well below normal.
