Canon shooter here, thus massively jealous.

On my last trip I lent my 70-200 to my friends who didn't have anything similar in that range, and I myself shot with the 100-300. I think it's safe to say that I missed the 30mm on the wide end far less than they missed the longer end (we both also had a 400 prime, me a 2.8, they a 4.0). In this context, this translates that if in their case the 200 was too short, the 150 would be even more so.

The only time when I'd see this reversed is at Shompole, where

Thank you very much. And yes I didn’t. Botswana. See a few posts up. I think the 70-200 makes more sense, as you say. That means only one gap (300 to 400). I’ll take the 28-70 f2 as my wide.

There’s a really good deal in Oz for the 400 2.8GM. Basically 9.5-10KUS new. Tempting. But for this trip, my first to Botswana and weight limited, I’ll stick with the 400-800. I seem to have gotten a really good copy as well.

I love reading this thread, despite the fact that as an adult, I have never been to any of these places, however a family member has book a trip on a safari - I think she said Tanzania around September. She has asked to borrow a camera. I have two options that I can lend her

Option 1: Fuji xt5 with 70-300 and potentially also the xe4 and 16-80 f4

Option 2: Nikon z50ii and 28-400 f4-f8

Originally I planned to give her the 1st option because it should be better for low light, but using it the other day I realised the xt5 can be difficult for someone not used to cameras and the then I got the z50ii which has better automatic modes, plus I am not sure if she would want to take two cameras which would leave her with just the xt5 and 70-300.
The Nikon concerns me because the lens is f8 after 200 and dawn and dusk is when she has said she is more likely to take photos, but then I think it is only 1 stop difference and has more reach , with the nik9n I could also send her with the 16-50 for times she doesn’t want a big lens.

Looking for some opinions and advice …..

We just returned from our very first trip to South Africa! We spent a total of 12 nights in the country: 2 nights in Johannesburg, 4 in Cape Town, and 6 in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve.

A bit about the lodges we stayed at:

We split our 6 nights in Sabi Sands between Inyati Game Lodge (4 nights) and Umkumbe Bush Lodge (2 nights). Looking back, we felt incredibly fortunate with our time at Inyati. Over the course of 8 game drives, we managed to see all of the Magnificent Seven—lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo, rhino, cheetah, and African wild dog—up close, besides all other more common wildlife. With the exception of wild dogs, cheetahs, and one male lion sighting (which we saw only once), we encountered the rest of the Big 5 multiple times during different drives.

In contrast, our luck didn’t carry over to Umkumbe. Aside from a brief glimpse of a leopard during one drive, most of our sightings there were limited to elephants and more common wildlife like impalas. In hindsight, I wish we had spent all six nights at Inyati—even though it was more than twice the cost of Umkumbe. The difference in experience was quite noticeable: Umkumbe’s traversing area is relatively small, and they don’t share traversing rights with the neighboring luxury lodges. Their guides, while incredibly kind and friendly, were younger and seemed less experienced. They also didn’t go as aggressively off-road as we’d expected.

In contrast, our guide at Inyati had 17 years of experience, and guiding clearly ran in the family—his father had worked at Mala Mala, and his brother (still guiding at Inyati) has over 40 years of experience. The level of tracking and off-roading he did to get us into great positions—driving through sand, over rocks, even across rivers—was simply outstanding.

Now for a bit on our gear:

I brought three main setups. I still need to go through and process the images, but so far, here’s our photo count by setup:

A1 II + 200–600mm: 3949 shots
A1 + 600mm f/4 GM: 2515 shots
A7R V + 35–150mm: 2757 shots

As expected, the 200–600mm saw the most action, but I’m so glad I didn’t listen to those who said the 600mm f/4 isn’t needed in Sabi Sands. Yes, we got quite close to the wildlife most of the time—but I still made great use of the 600mm, not just for birds but also for close-up portraits. The image quality and rendering from that lens are just on another level.

I’ll likely be sharing some photos in the Nature and Wildlife forum once I’ve had time to edit, but for now, I just wanted to give a quick summary of our time in Sabi Sands in case it’s helpful to others planning a trip.

Happy to hear you had a great time! Great insight as well. It really does come down to guiding, doesn't it.

I appreciate your data on lenses used, that's always a topic in this thread so it's good to have some real world experience. Great images!

I try to warn everybody considering Umkumbe... it is just tiny.

People come upon it because it is the least expensive option in Sabi Sands... but it is not a deal.

In that price range people would be better off at a camp in one of the other private reserves.... or in East Africa.

Or look at Madikwe game reserve. 75 000 hectares. Malaria free. Jacky's game lodges caters well for photographers and are also asociated with Pangolin safaris.

I've been to Madikwe many years ago and I also went there at after it was flooded and rebuilt. Always had great sightings on day and night game drives. It's the only place I was able to see Wild Dogs who were on a waterbuck kill. Madikwe doesn't allow personal vehicles on game drives. You can drive 75 miles to Pilanesberg if you want do game drives with your personal vehicle. Both places are great.

This past January I took my A9iii + 300mm with either 1.4x or 2.0x TC, and the A7R V + 70-200mm GMii.

It was a great setup (super light, portable and easy to toss around and work with), but there's no denying it that for an Africa safari a zoom certainly has a big advantage. Just as an example, I took this leopard shot with the 300mm + 2.0TC at 600mm. Again this was with the A9iii so the A1ii would certainly have a bit more detail.

Hello All,

Sorry. Boring gear advice question.

I am heading to Botswana with Pangolin in July. Chobe, Shinde and Dinaka. I have shot in Africa several times but not in Botswana. Mostly in The Mara, Samburu and Serrengetti. Plus a few smaller parks over the years. The big differences on this trip will be that we’ll have boat and off track access and potentially night drives. These will be new to me. Likely we’ll be a lot closer than I’ve generally been used to. Hence the lens options.

I am taking an A1ii with 400-800, for long close and birds and a 28-70

My vote would go to the simpler combo, which in your case seems to be the Nikon (e.g. no lens changes). But from experience in my wider family I'd say that the much bigger issue is to spend some time in preparation to get her to gain some experience with the gear and settings. The worst case was someone who accidentally moved the focus area into the corner and didn't notice (nor understand the focus indicators nor knew how to verify in camera) during an entire weekend trip.

A couple of thoughts-

Even when you can go off-road that doesn't mean you will always be able to get close. My experience is that even when I can go off-road I still often use focal ranges of 500-600mm.

Getting ready to book another Africa trip for June/July 2026.
South Luangwa, Mala Mala, and TImbavati.
However, Mala Mala and Timbavati seem to be very similar, so wondering if a third different destination would make more sense. MM to T is only a 4 hour drive.
Any suggestions.

Mala Mala is very consistent for seeing big five game-- the reserve is massive! It's also pretty well know leopards.

Timbavati will feel more remote and wild--you'll have the potential to see white lions.

Honestly they are not/feel the same.

Bots in Nov is the start of summer so it will be hot and you might get thunderstorms and rain in the afternoon. If you're a birder it's pretty solid. You should also see large zebra herds as well since it's the birthing season.
