Wishful thinking. Lol.
I see Z8 as a higher MP and lower fps mainly for landscape and portrait. Then a lower MP Z for low light journalists and concert shooter.
I think you're right.....but personally I'd really appreciate seeing a Z9 equivalent in terms of 45mp and cAF but with no grip, 10-15 fps and reduced video capability. If that could come at a lower price point, winner winner chicken dinner for me. If it were 60mp with the rest of these factors, that would be my second hope.

My Z8 will be in the form of a used Z9 in two or three years.
I was thinking that also.....but then I was thinking that I really value the smaller size of the Z7 for landscapes and portraits. I don't want two cameras with 45mp+ sensors but I wouldn't give up the Z7 given its size and IQ for a Z9. But a Z8 could replace a Z7, D500 and meet the Z9 needs I would hope
I also really like the form of the Z7 for landscape and value 45mp as a sweet spot for all my needs. I will keep it as my lightweight and compact option if I obtain a larger Z cam.
My interest in the Z9 stems in large part due to frame rate and it’s AF voodoo, but what had really peaked my interest in actually acquiring a Z9 has more to do with Nikkor S-Line super telephotos. I am enamored with the idea of total freedom for handheld wildlife shooting with Nikon’s 800 PF, 400 2.8 S, and the 100-400 S. (I imagine the pending 600mm will also be a great option - Nikon might be saving the best and most expensive for last).
For that subject material I prefer a fully functional dual grip. This is especially relevant for subjects that require rapid switches between horizontal and vertical orientation, like wading birds. In this case the extra size and weight is actually a positive hand comfort and haptics trade off.
So, not sure exactly what would excite me in a Z8. I definitely don’t want more than 45-50mp. I guess a stacked-sensor dual-grip camera with a processor and stills firmware like the Z9 but without all the video capabilities, and maybe only 12fps for $1,500 less? Yes, that is the camera I want to add.

I find it interesting that Nikon skipped the Z8 name when they developed the Z9. I hope that's because they'll implement most of the Z9 technology in a new Z8 camera, sans grip. Similar to the D3 / D700 lineup which were released in Aug, 2007 and July, 2008, respectively.
