All the photos were taken with an A7 IV and a 200-600 G. Raw processed to taste in LR and heavily cropped.

And this cormorant was on top of a roof about 25 meters high. The BEAF found his eye and locked easily on it. Well, he was not moving Most of the action shots I took for BIF in Hi+ mode were sharp. Bursts of about 23-25 shots at 10 fps I guess (loosy raw) yielded 18-20 sharp photos. Not bad at all. For my taste, high iso settings from 1600 and up result in fine detail loss and it's perceptibly more noisy than my A7III and A7 RIII.

I believe that IV has dual native ISO (the second at 3200). Could you try that and see if you can notice any differences?

Hi.

I think it is a dual stage ISO sensor, like all Sony cameras. No ISO invariant. I'll try to find some shots at ISO 3200 but I have sold the A7 IV some days ago. I didn't like it at all, somewhat dissapointed.

Finally, I closed my eyes an I jumped to the pond, ordering an Alpha 1 four days ago. I've received it today. Night and day imho, despite having only shot a few hundreds photohgraphs in ES. This camera is absolutely insane in all regards.

Sorry if I can't help any more.

Best regards

Can I ask what specifically you didn't like about the A7IV? I am seriously considering switching from a Nikon Z to the A7IV so interested in feedback. Thanks.

I just got one today as a gift for my nephew, who's just starting to get interested in bird photography. I wanted bird EAF for him and a nice body. Playing around with it, it's really nice, but if you've used an A9 or A1, it's just such a huge step down. It's been a couple years since I've used anything but an A9 or A1 in the field, so it threw me for a loop to have the image blackout during shooting. You don't think about how great of a feature that is until you don't have it. The AF is pretty good, but it's certainly not A9 or A1 good, not surprising, but again, a step down. I love having the extra dials on top of the A1 as well. There is of course also rolling shutter issues, but none of these things are surprises.

All of that said, for the price point this is a really great camera. I didn't find any issues with the noise up to ISO 3200 and didn't have to go past that with the little bit of testing I did. If an A9 or A1 isn't in your budget this is a great camera. He's going to love it.

Slight NR in Topaz

The rolling shutter; no NR on ISO 3200 cropped and it's fine

Hi RobDMB

First of all let me say that this is only my opinion under the light of my needs. Any other user may disagree.

The camera is not bad, of course. But it depends on the expectations. I usually shot with an A7 RIII, so high res is something that I am so accostumed now that it turned 33 mpx to be low for my needs. When I bought the A7 IV I hoped it would be enough, but nah. When shooting birds, every mpx counts, mainly when birds in my zone are very shy and don't allow people close to them. So I was dissapointed by this resolution issue. Also, when birds get small in the frame and I apply Topaz for noise reduction, a lot of fine detail is erased at the same time, making the photo look plasticky. With the A7 IV it's still like the noise dots are similar in size to the pixels that conform detail in plumage and consequently gets lost after Topaz. If the sensor is high res, like the A1 or any other similar camera, these noise dots are easily removed, preserving the finest detail. I think it may be difficult to understand unless someone is used to work with high res ff sensors. The first time I shot raw with my A1 I perceived that the results had more luminance noise than the A7 IV at medium ISO, let's say 800 or 1600. But once denoised, wow, it was like a miracle and the photos resulted with plenty of razor sharpness, detail and natural cleaniness in a way that lesser mpx sensors can't get in my experience. All in all, I have to reckon that this is not a fault in the A7 IV per se. Its sensor simply didn't meet my expectations regarding high resolution advantages. And by the way, 24 mpx resolution was the main impediment for me to ever buy an A9 or A9 II.

Then there is the AF-C precision. Despite being a big step ahead from A7III it is not near close to the A1 (I'm still working on this sophisticated system and far from mastering it). But when I nail the focus with the A1 on a bird in flight, the resulting photos look sharp, extremely sharp, insanely sharp I should say. When the A1 doesn't nail focus, the results have a very slight perceptible blurriness in the point where focus should be obtained. So, with the A7 IV, my personal feeling is that I am conitnuously in this second case with birds that are not big enough in the frame. On the other hand, if the birds are big enough and fill a good part of the frame, then this situation is not a problem no more . But I still feel like wanting more from the A7 IV.

After reading myself this two paragraphs I lean to think that the main disadvantage of the A7 IV (and the origin of my dissapointment) is its lowish resolution sensor. I am completely convinced that it would have resulted in an absolute killer camera if it had 42 to 45 mpx resolution -it could have shocked the market for sure-. Even keeping the same all remaining attributes as it is now, like 10 fps loosy, 6 fps looseless, infamous rolling shutter in ES, blackout, instantaneous Bionz XR resposiveness, and even the crappy articulated screen just to mention some pros and cons. Despite all this comments, Sony did a great pass, getting 10.100 euros from my pockets! (A7 IV + A1).

I hope I could help in some way. Please deeply think about hi resolution and its impact on IQ, this is my only advice.
Have a nice Xmas

It cracks me up that people are saying that the A7 IV is not up to speed compared to the A1. The A1 is more than double the cost and it makes no sense how you can compare the 2.

The A7IV appears to be exactly what it was designed to be: an evolutionary follow-on to the A7III. For those that need/want what the A9 series brings, this is probably not the primary camera for you. Same for those that need/want the high mega-pixel capabilities of the A7R series. It does, however, appear to be a fantastic "entry level" Sony product designed to compete with similar entries from the other brands.

Like most people, I am curious to see how it performs in the hands of more regular photographers and what they have to say. Specifically, how the new sensor performs in autofocus, RTT and low light situations.

I think the low light noise from ISO 3200 to 4000 handling pretty well. If possible, will keep my maximum ISO at 3200 for birding. Sorry that 95% of my usage are into wildlife photography.

Thanks to the Gods we don't all have to share the same toothbrush
I think the 7iv is yet another complete winner by Sony. The 33mpx is such
a happy sweet spot of higher ISO performance yet still gives great cropability.
The AF-C tracking is a9 and then some but maybe not quite a1 level. Still anyone wanting
to BIF only needs a 200600G
Buffer is crazy good if you can tolerate compressed raw (I can). Kinston Canvas UHS-IIs work a charm.
The reason for me and the 7iv is that I can and did map all buttons/dials to within 99% of the a1.
Picking up one is picking up the other for muscle memory.

Here's a shot with the 24/2.8G

Switched it up to 3200. I've heard some Youtubers say something nice happens at 3200
I also saw, DPR I think, that the 7iv wasn't so great at ISO challenges. Well I'm good at 3200

BEAF worked a charm. Will be next month on a Florida trip before I can experience the 7iv and BIF.

I've only shot with the camera once, and I've read/saw the same info about iso 3200.
I looked through my shots, the images at 3200 and above, look better than the shots below 3200 to about iso 800.

My next time out, I using iso 3200, aperture priority set wide open, and let the shutter fall where it well.

I tried running the shots through Topaz and it's not pretty. Topaz DeNoise AI, that I have used on almost every photo
for the last two years, destroys the details in the images from this camera.

Like I say, I've been out with one time, I know I'll have a bit of a learning curve, so I'm sure a few tricks will be learned, and
all will be right in the world again.
