p.1 #1 · 16-80 AF-S f2.8-4E ED DX VR as a walkaround lens for a Nikon D7200

Dear Board,

I have a previously enjoyed Nikon D7200 coming to me. I am looking for a walkaround lens for general landscape and travel photos. I want to have a lens that affords the 24mm FOV that I had with my Canon 15-85 IS USM on my Canon bodies.

I have an 18-85 VR paired with an older D300 currently, and i am pleased with the results that I get with the set-up. I am wondering if it is worth upgrading to the 16-80 for use with the D7200? I would like to have the extra 3mm or so of W/A coverage, but not being very familiar with Nikon lenses I was hoping someone could tell me if it would be worth the exrtra expense to get the 16-80?

Regards,

Tim Murphy

When I had a dx camera I used the 16-80. The one I had was excellent and I liked everything about it: the zoom range, lens speed, build quality, and sharpness. The focusing speed was good as was the minimum focusing distance. Overall, I thought it was a really nice lens. If I would ever get another dx camera, this is the lens I would look for, so in my opinion it was well worth the upgrade.

Tim. I have never used the 18-85 but I really like the 16-80 on my D500 when I occasionally shoot landscapes. I would expect it to do well on the 7200 also. Here are a couple of BW examples handheld using the VR.

Dear Board,

Thanks to all who answered, and thanks for the photo examples too. It didn't take much to convince me that the 16-80 would be a worthwhile addition.

To my knowledge, Nikon never made an 18-85mm VR lens. They did make a 16-85mm lens, which is well-regarded. I had one before purchasing the 16-80mm and enjoyed it. The newer model is brighter but not much sharper. Both are great lenses.

its sharp enough. and serves well.

i really don't know how people shoot while under the impression that their optics are "under performers" in their eyes. and then constantly searching for the next level of supposed photo tech nirvana. me, I'm looking for the shot that is sublime to/for me. i try to keep my mind clear for that.

Another vote for this lens ..... very convenient and good image quality....used it both on a D7100 and D500.

The 16-80 on a D7200 or D500 is ideal for most uses. The Sigma 17-70C is a worthy alternative - I used both for everything from walkabout to weddings before I went mirrorless. Add a decent 70-300 for a compact versatile kit.

I had the 17-70C, and it was passed to my daughter, you are correct. Did you use it has a close up optic?

I used the Sigma 17-70 mostly for weddings with occasional fun outings. No real macros, but certainly sharp close up for butterflies and HO model trains.

I have the 16-80 and like it a lot for many reasons. Slightly disagreeing with a post above, I would mention that I also previously had the 16-85, and at least in my case, the 16-80 is noticeably sharper.

It's an expensive lens, but turns up from time to time as a refurb at Adorama and B&H for a good bit less.

One thing about this lens that differs from others is the large, square lens hood. While it's a bit clumsy, it also sits well on a table, and it's the first such hood I've found that permits you to turn a polarizing filter easily with the hood still on. A small thing but surprisingly handy.

opinions do vary. that hood does its job more efficiently and is less clumsy. its use with CPLs is irrelevant with me cause i rarely have the hood on when using one. slides in and out of my bag in reverse with ease. it is built way better the most of the regular round hoods. and it works really well with my 24-70/4S cause i consider that hood weak and more $ to replace

i would like more hoods to be made like this especially for the 24-120/4

My 16-80mm is also a bit sharper, but I had a really good copy of the 16-85mm before upgrading.

My copy of the 16-85 was a well used gray market one, and though not bad, it was less than stellar, and unfortunately its diaphragm mechanism malfunctioned during a once-in-lifetime trip to Bhutan. It recovered but I never trusted it quite. It also has a pretty bad back focus requiring compensation, where the 16-80 is spot on.

I do agree on the hood, even if one doesn't (as I sometimes do) use a CPL in the wild. It's well made, and the extra mounting snap keeps it secure. My wife has an 18-140 with its stock petal hood, and it tends to rotate a little without being noticed until the image is shot, vignette and all.

The square hood also makes it possible to use the built-in flash at room distances, though you still have to remove it for closeups.

16-80 is fantastic! I use it on the D500, will be awesome on other DX Nikon's too. Offers the view of 24-120 on the FX cameras

I'd say definitely worth it. One of my D7200 bodies has the 16-80 superglued on. (Well, maybe not that permanent but they are a great pair.) I use it for night launches, stars, etc. f/10, iso 100, 159.9 second exposure.
