I'm looking for recommendations for storing my file over this Thanksgiving weekend. I have a small laptop I could connect to, but is there a better option?
I use the NEXTODI little thingy. Takes CFexpress and SD cards, and you put whatever drive you want into it. Not compatible with AngelBird cards for some reason.
A laptop is usually the best solution because it gives you the ability to view and/or edit images if necessary. It also allows you to confirm that the images have successfully been transferred from the card. Moving images from a memory card to a proprietary third-party storage device is fine... unless the proprietary device craps out or has issues, or images are missing, etc.
If you don't want to bring a laptop, you are probably better off getting a few more memory cards.. CFExpress and SD cards are much more reliable than a third party device.
Why Don't you just use a couple of pretty high capacity SD cards?
They're cheap, easily available and take up almost no space and then you'll have them.
Personally if I'm traveling I would never use my vacation time to view or sort photos but that's just me!

John, I definitely don't disagree with that, but I guess it depends on how you define "vacation time". If my trip requires long air travel, then being able to cull trip photos while at the gate lounge and on the flight home is nice. And if there are international connecting flight(s), I could easily have 6 to 12 hours to cull through thousands and thousands (and thousands and ...) of photos. Beats watching the same movies over and over on flights.

I have a friend who traveled to Antarctica with my 1DX and no laptop, even though I told him to please please bring at least his MacBook Air. He didn't, because space. When he got back he found that there was a big hair lodged somewhere in the shutter, that wasn't visible in the OVF but certainly in the pictures. He now travels with a laptop

But in the OP's case, he is only shooting over this Thanksgiving weekend , and probably not going as far as Antarctica.

That's very likely. That's why I replied twice, once to the OP answering his question, and then a 2nd time to the follow-up about never going through photos on a trip.

Don't think he would need the 1TB capacity of the NEXTO DI either.
I either just use more cards, or on occasion bring the laptop.
Back when cards were pricey and small ($200.00 for 4GB) I used to use a thing called an X-Drive. But this was tedious, and left you with no redundancy. I;ve found cards to be the best for portability and simplicity.
The laptop option only comes in if I need to pack for something else.
You can get 256gb of SD cards <$40. Even the inexpensive micro SD can be pretty fast, depending on your needs. Although I haven'tused on R5
You could take a hdd or laptop, and there might be good reasons to do that, but as far as emptying cards I'd rather leave on the card than only put on one hdd etc. Really need at least 2 hdd and that's a bit if a hassle besides having to carry them without banging them on stuff

EL, I definitely don't disagree with THAT but I guess it depends on how you like to spend your airport dead time. If I have over 4 hours I'm outa there! LoL
I had 6 hours in Panama once and used it to take a tour of the panama canal. In Narita(Japan) went to Narita and had lunch. In Boston barely had enough time to go into town and have some Boston Clam Chowder! And so on, and so on but you're right I wouldn't waste the down time if only to take a well deserved nap!!!
I just wouldn't drag a lap top along either since I can do any research or communication on my phone.
And a 1T Sandisk Extreme Pro sd card cost $275.

TIA
For important shoots I use multiple cards (when one is full, use another) and I shoot to both cards (CFex and SD) the SD card is a backup to the CF. (both cards same storage capabilities).
Unless you want to edit, why download to a laptop during the shoot? At the end of the day(s) I download to LR and reformat the cards.
