p.1 #1 · Layne in natural light

Layne is a friend who I tend to photograph once or twice a year when I'm feeling inspired or want to try something out. He's very photogenic and loves to be in front of a camera, so it's a win/win. This is a shot from our most recent shoot, which was last August. Funnily enough I wanted to photograph him because I wanted to try a new location out, but the only shots I seemed to like were from below using the sky as the backdrop, which could have been taken practically anywhere.

Lit with natural light and the white side of a disc reflector for fill. Shot using an original Canon 5D with a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens attached. Settings were 1/320th sec, f/10, ISO 320.

I've really enjoyed most of your posts recently, but this one doesn't move me like the rest.

The extreme twist back towards the camera appears awkward and the totally black shirt with no detail is unsettling.

Anyway, said with respect, and I look forward to the next one.

I think if you flipped this to B&W it would really be far more dramatic and dynamic and would make his expression really pop more so than the color version. I really like the expression he's given you and you captured.

Initially I wanted to make this one black and white, but was honestly having a hard time getting it to look right to my eye, but I liked the natural tones of the color shot as an alternative. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
