p.1 #1 · Magalodon ToothScape

Standing in the soft, heavenly warm Florida surf with waves rolling and fanning over this magnificent Megalodon tooth looking rock, with dolphins 🐬 and sea turtles 🐢 swimming by to take a peek and wild radiating soft light skipping across the horizon… It was the thrill of my week! Who needs coffee? ☕️ 😁
Then I finished the morning with a dip in the pool, and then back to my computer to work on images (mine and others) educational materials and communications! I am blessed. Life is good. 🙏🏼

Huge thank you everyone. Thank you for your patience in me responding here very infrequently lately. Things are finally settling down and I look forward to participating a lot more. The work here on FM is always inspiring. And great folks too! 😁

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it!

A couple of things went into capturing this. One is that where I live and lead workshops, I don’t know if there’s ever a bad sunrise! I’ve been shooting here for about four years and I have never seen a time when it wasn’t awesome. So, awesome light!

The second thing is that I am an Ultra Wide junkie. I’ve been shooting with the Canon 11 to 24 since its inception. Shooting at 11 mm (or near) really helps with that incredible wide-angle wide sweeping perspective.

The next thing is that I walk the beach and photograph it almost every single morning. And I carefully study what formations and locations are great at low tide, mid low tide, mid tide, mid high tide, and high tide. Also I study the tide charts every day and many weather apps. I shot this rock a day before but I failed at it because water was fanning over it, but by the time I set up the tide had gone out too much. So, I learned a lot of things like don’t hesitate! Also when the tide is coming in you can really capitalize on formations you see.

Lastly, and this is a hard one for a lot of my clients at first… take your camera OFF your tripod! And put it as high as you can, as low as you can, to the side left and right, and in every possible position to really be extremely purposeful in your foreground. With the wide angles there are usually an almost infinite amount of possibilities that most people never imagine because they don’t do this. It’s like my religion. 😁 Look at your LCD and your viewfinder both and perfect your foreground. I love to try to find very exaggerated forgrounds. Sometimes only an inch difference in your camera angle changes everything! This is a greatly underutilized technique.

Once you get set up, shoot like a madman! I bracket exposures to the extreme to make sure that I get the full dynamic range of the sun all the way into the shadows. I always keep an eye on the sky and when I feel like it is reaching its climax I always photograph many brackets especially if the sun is showing. But immediately after that, I find my favorite shutter speed for the water and just shoot water shots over and over and over and over. I also try all kinds of shutter speeds anywhere from maybe five seconds to maybe 15th of a second for water.

If I see feedback on my LCD and I know that I got my foreground perfect, I will immediately shoot a sky shot to make sure I have the dynamic range.

Lastly, one wave splashed over my camera when I was shooting a shot just like this the next day. So, make sure you have a hat, or a plastic bag, or a towel or anything to block those occasional big splashes. Unless you’re made out of money and it doesn’t matter to you. 😁

But the bottom line that I see in my workshops is that when people find a really good potential composition, it’s my opinion that they grossly under shoot it. I’m thinking about the foreground, the wave textures, the middle ground, the background, and all elements of the image. Sometimes this all comes together in a single shot. Sometimes it comes together in a blend…

I hope it helps somebody. 😁

Thank you so much Roy. My wife was the one who suggested the name. So she gets the credit. I didn’t even know what a megalodon was. 😳

Thank you Brad. It took holding my position and shooting a ton of images to get that water texture. 😊

Thank you very much Doug. It certainly helps to have a phenomenal file to begin with!

Also starting from a linear raw file and using the 32 bit raw on raw Adobe Workflow is the absolute game changer for true lossless flexibility and handling of our files. Everything is better. Control, dynamic range, colors, subtle tonalites, blending (even 32 bit luminosity masking or Blend If masking)…

All the best to you and your family.

Many can learn how to take as you mentioned, but few of them can make such top quality photos.
You are wonderfully mastered after numerous trial and error in great passion Not many can create such sublime images.
