I don't think the matter of "one more step" is of any consequence. The full name on the sign is repeated complete in the other signs, and abbligiament is only missing 90% of the "T" (a remnant of it is still there, if you look close). Although, clearing the arrow may be more pertinent.
To anyone who is truly interested in finding out what the sign reads, it is of very little effort to do so. For those who don't want to put forth that insignificant amount of effort ... well, that's an indication of how much they just want to be spoon fed, and really can't be bothered with putting forth any effort into exploring and trying to see what it was that you saw ... i.e. lazy viewers, imo. That, and the sign while it may have some degree of interplay ... I think it pales in comparison to the other elements involved. I think your title gives indication to the solitude, as having more meaning to the image than the interplay of signage.
To me, we should not let lazy viewers be the sole judge and jury of our work. If you really like it, then it tells me that you have the ability to see more into this image than the average person. Don't be dismayed by the mediocrity of viewers, being unreceptive to something that warrants more time and attention on their part.
Imo, there is much goodness within this capture. Many elements of study, and composition that are working together well, to give a sense of a place. As an option, I might explore cropping below the roof line, to rid the antenna's. But, that may change the narrative somewhat, so that's why I said "option".
Imo, this is nice. From that, I have a question for you.
Imagine you're standing there, witnessing this scene, and you call someone to describe the scene / setting to them. What is it you would tell them, in that moment. Or, if you had no picture and returned home to describe what it was like to be there ... how would you tell that to someone? What is it you would like to convey to them? Imo, those very things that you would "tell" someone about this setting / scene are already existent in your image. I think there's a good amount of story contained here within.
Of course, it's YOUR story ... but, I see much goodness (multiple positive critique points) in the capture of it that you have presented. I could list them, but I'll wait to hear your heart / mind on the matter.
I've learned that there are times that some of my favorite pieces grab very little popular attention. Yet, there are still a few folks who can appreciate them, for how deeply they look into them with the viewer's effort. Whenever the piece warrants a deeper, effort ... well, the popularity of it seems to be inversely proportional, at least in the popular realm.
A quiet piece that speaks to a quiet scene. The folks on Flickr were just silent because they were dumbstruck (or too eager to be entertained, without having to actually think), and didn't know what to say about it.
Anyway, I've rambled ... I'll end with this, "Pro" or not ... this is nice, and it speaks well to your eye, vision and awareness of presence, etc. Period.

P.S. Oh, yeah ... and the technicals (focus, tones, processing, etc.) are nice, too. And yet, they don't get in the way of immersing yourself into the image, or try to steal the stage.
Yeah, nice ... all the way around.

I think one of the things that charmed me most about this scene was the man's tilted head. As though he was carrying on a conversation in his head, or singing to himself. Just my imagination...
