The 70-200 is 1,045 g without tripod mount. Most users would probably keep the tripod mount on. The weight of the mount is not indicated on the Sony webpage; presumably it is about 70 g. Thus the lens with the mount is about 1,115 g vs the Tamron 1,165 g, which is about 5% heavier. This difference in weight is probably insignificant; it can be said that the two lenses are roughly the same in terms of weight.

The GM 70-200mm II has an internal zooming mechanism while the Tamron 35-150mm extends when zoomed at the long end. In other words, the weight distribution of the GM 70-200mm II lens remains the same throughout the zooming range, while that of the Tamron is not. Your observation may be correct if the Tamron is at 35mm but definitely it is not the case when it is zoomed to 150mm.

I am not talking down the lens. I think the Tamron 35-150mm lens is great but I am just stating the fact….

Sorry I missed this - an important point (I don't own the 70-200 GM mark II)

I have both the 70-200v2 and 35-150 and the v1 of the 70-200.

Use them for different things. V1 is the worst of the bunch and doesn’t hold a candle to the 35-150. 35-150 is currently my most used lens, event work, sports, food, product, it can do it all. However there is one big thing it cant do that the 70-200v2 can, and that’s auto focus tracking while zooming out . It lacks that ability, and it’s almost a dream killer. It’s similar to that of the 24-70GM in that regard, which basically collects dust in my shelf now. I hope there’s an update that allows this, but I don’t think it’s in the cards.

70-200 v2 and 35-150 are on par with sharpness, I’d say, focus is slightly faster with the v2, and the focus limiter switch helps when shooting thru a cage or fence.

Here’s some snaps I got of it while waiting for sunset last night. So only one hike/shoot in the books with the foot, and I generally like it so far. Only thing I don’t like is that due to the fact it’s a third party foot, it doesn’t have the same ease of turning a knob to switch between landscape and portrait orientation. I really like that ability on the 100-400GM, and it was slightly annoying not having that available here. Sure you can loosen the nut and twist it manually, but it takes a bit of care to make sure things are lined up correctly. Overall, I like having the foot so far, but I do wish there was a way to more easily change orientation.

Cool stuff. Lucky you being in Patagonia! I'm curious has the 35-150 removed the need for you to carry your 100-400 to Patagonia?

Thanks

Cool... Do you feel this collar would be strong/tight enough to hold the camera+lens? I don't expect to use this lens on a tripod very often, but I do like to carry my camera+lens with a strap on my shoulder, and I do feel that this Tamron lens might be a bit too heavy on the mount if the strap is connected to the camera body while it is hanging off my shoulder. So I am wondering if it would be safe to attach the arca-swiss clamp of my strap to the foot of this collar instead?

I forgot to take it out of my pack before we started the hike, so I took my 100-400GM up anyways, but yes, at least for laguna de los tres, the 100-400 was way more zoom than I needed, and the 35-150 was more than enough zoom for the place. There were some foxes up there that I didn’t try to photograph because we were short on time with the lighting. I can see the 100-400 still having a role purely for wildlife, but overall, since wildlife isn’t my thing, I wish I had left it at the hotel. I won’t be taking the 100-400 to Laguna sucia. May take it to Laguna torre though to try to get some 560mm shots of cerro torre. Yeah man, this is my first time in El Chalten, and it is otherworldly. Straight out of a Tolkien novel.

I wish I could give an informed answer but honestly just don’t have enough time with it to say one way or the other. I use a really right stuff L bracket with the QD connector that works with my AR-15 strap, so I’m still using my Magpul strap connected to the L bracket when carrying it on my person.

Well I haven't tried to do it out in the field but just playing around at home it seems to be pretty easy. Obviously not as smooth as the dedicated mount on my 100-400Gm but perfectly usable. I had this adapter when I had the Sony 70-300 a few years ago and I would happily use it if needed on the Tamron

I also reversed the collar on it's bas as otherwise the tightening screw is on the righthand grip side which personally I found annoying

Just an update on my use of the lens foot (for those that might care). In use, I didn't find that it provided me more convenience than just using a nodal rail attached to my L bracket, and it didn't lend itself to convenient and precise changing between portrait and landscape orientation like a lens with a built in foot such as the 100-400GM. (entirely understandable and no fault of the collar/foot itself)

I think the collar/foot may be more useful to those that don't have an L bracket permanently on their camera body where a nodal rail isn't as useful, as well as for those that don't often change orientation. I also found that I didn't care for the added weight and bulk of the collar/foot on an already heavy lens.

Finally, I found myself actually switching between my RIV with the 35-150 and the RIII with the 16-35 more frequently than with the 100-400, and so constantly changing the orientation between those was more a pain. Since I use an Acratech pano head that makes switching the plate orientation easy with a few twists of a knob, I found it easier to just keep it in the orientation to work with the L bracket, and I removed the collar/foot entirely for the last half of our trip.

Obviously, other's mileage will vary, and I can certainly see many use cases where the collar/foot may be useful in other applications. For me and my application, it just didn't end up providing a net plus in convenience.

Those are some neat Tripod collars. Decisions! Am I reading the price difference right?

Novaflex is $140+
Hoage is $45 ish?

May go with the more economical choice?

Is the Hoage one easy to work with the focus and zoom rings as it sits closer to them?

Call and check at smaller retailers. They seem to get this lens in stock more often. I bought mine online from Competitive Camera in Dallas, Tx. Eugene was very helpful, and shipped me a second copy overnight when the first one seemed to have been lost by UPS! Eventually UPS located the first copy though and returned it back to Eugene...

I picked mine up from Biggs Camera in Charlotte, NC (got their last one in stock). I think the recommendation to call around to smaller shops is good advice.
