p.1 #1 · Broken Orange Chair

Model resting in a broken orange chair sitting in a corner of the 3rd floor of an old tannery that was part of the underground railway about 30 miles north of downtown Atlanta. Biggest problem with the location is that residue from the time as a tannery still presents itself so many years later. Tried on multiple visits to clean the floors but had to give up and just accept to bring paper towels and baby wipes to clean the models feet and body whenever she had been laying on the floor. Natural light from behind camera position and then one strobe high and camera right in a 5' ocatabox. 1st time out with the Nikon 24-120 in this case 100mm f11.0. Had a number of images from this location but almost all would be considered NSFW.

I think you did a great job with the lighting, and I like the serene expression on her face. I personally wouldn't have gone so far with the skin editing, but that is personal taste. I also don't think the chair worked out well as a posing tool in this shot, because it seems to be taking up the most focus and space in the shot, and effectively hiding most of the model's body. The way she's posed and the way her torso is hidden makes it sort of look like a jumble of awkward limbs to me. Just my two cents.

First glance ...

Then the deeper look. I find it interesting that both the model and the chair are lying on their back. Also, the shape / form of her calve/foot and forearm/hand have a reminiscent mimic of the chair's leg/foot form. Not sure if that was by design, or just happened, but I'll go with "your eye".

Curious to a mono rendering (despite the "orange chair" predicated on color). Of course, then it's just a broken chair ... although, I don't seem to see anything broken about it.

Thanks Daniel, Actually like the chair as it allowed the very relaxed pose, while at the same time did hide the portions of the body which would make this NSFW.

Thanks…can’t say it was a conscious design in posing the model but may have been a subconscious result in finding what I thought was an attractive pose that conveyed serenity and comfortable position in the broken chair. You can’t see but the left back leg of the chair was missing. Have not tried a mono version, may have to give it a go, but really like the tones and color in the back wall.

Yeah, I gotcha at the warm color connection / tie in between the chair and the section of back wall. That would likely be different in mono. BUT, there might be some other goodness lurking in the tones. Just a thought, not necessarily an expectation.

Thanks Dan, I have been very fortunate to have worked with some wonderful people. It's the collaboration between the two to insure that we both work towards a satisfactory image. I do like to shot in locations that have some character rather than sterile chrome and glass feel of newer.modern venues.

Here a quick try at BW conversion. not quite sure how I feel, especially in the skin tones. Usually like a more "chromey" tone to the skins highlights.

Color works best. In the b&w my mind sees it like a bunch of body parts in a box.

Agree it also seems that in the B&W the background and chair seemm to loose their separation, as the tones are too similar.

Wonderful lighting and a very unique pose. I love the result - in color.

An intriguing image, that's for sure. It is something that you have to look a few times to enjoy and appreciate the work that went into creating that. Well done, John! Yes, I like the color version better, too.
