p.1 #1 · R5 sensor readout timing in 8K video vs. elect shutter (stills)

My goal is to capture quality stills of unpredictable transient events (like a jumping frog) with acceptable visible distortion. Mechanical shutter is not an option.

Has anyone documented the R5’s sensor data readout times when shooting A) 8K video and B) electronic shutter stills?

As a first baseline the readout is certainly faster than 50 mS for electronic shutter (20 FPS max, 45mp) and 33 mS for 8K video (30 FPS, 33mp).

I’d like to minimize rolling shutter effects in support of capturing this type of image.

Thanks,
Steveb

With a natural background I have never noticed distortions in eshutter mode.
Even with buildings in the background I only see distortions with very fast panning. I am talking about tens of thousands of shots in dozens of situations over the period of a year, on two R5 cameras.

This clip shows the lack of distortion I am use to 99.9% of the time:

Nice! I take your point as I may be obsessing over details that are not really important :-)

I know the ES scan is 1/60th for stills mode.
I'm not sure if it is the same for video or slower? On the Sony A1 the stills is 1/240 but the video is 1/60.

EDIT:
Just found this table in the DPR article on R5: https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-r5-review/7

8K/30p / oversampled 4K 15.4ms
Sub-sampled 4K/30 9.7ms
4K/60p 9.7ms
1080/60p 8.7ms
4K/120p 9.7ms

The 1.6x crop mode has a slightly better readout speed since it doesn't have to do a full-height readout. So if you find that the readout is slightly too slow in FF mode, give crop mode a try.
