While doing some street photography in Kyiv, I came across this young couple on a bench and the look of sadness on the young woman's face got my attention. What the cause of the profound sadness was, I simply don't know. But the boyfriend doesn't seem too worried. You can be physically close but miles apart in emotional disconnection.

The "soft focus" does this image proud "Rel"!!!!
Nice catch!!!!

Thanks. It's amazing how going from tack sharp to a softer focus can, in and of itself, change the entire tone of the photo.
One thing is for certain, I see a lot of dear john letters in this young man's future. But no one writes letters anymore so it will be dearJohn texts. Or a Tik Tok post.

"Soft focus" has become a lost art in much photography I have viewed. To those who say, Well Dan you haven't seen it"! You probably are correct!
It was used very heavily in the old "b/w tv days". Best example of this, IMHO, is "Casablanca" and the soft focus on a crying Ingrid Bergman. It empahsizes many emotions most elegantly!
Glad to see it posted here!

The sharpened image made the young woman in the shot look prematurely old and haggard. Tiredness was overpowering the sadness and that's what I felt most when I stumbled upon them. When I softened things up, her youth came out more, so did the sadness, and I was good with that.

Your excellent photo takes me back. Beware of a young Ukrainian woman, there face may be pouty but rest assured their intentions are deadly.
Yikes! Glad I wasn't stung by the love bug while I was out there. lol. There were beautiful young women no matter where I turned. They seemed more friendly than the women stateside also which was a relief. But that's how they lure you in I guess?
