p.1 #1 · Peregrine Food Transfer and Pelican Attacks
I posted a few Peregrine images in a prior post, Peregrines at Torrey Pines
Here are a few more showing a food transfer from the male to the female, who then fed it to the chick in the nest on the cliff wall.
Another Peregrine activity is their attacks on Pelicans and Gulls that get too close to their nest. The female is particularly aggressive and has killed a few Pelicans. The Pelicans usually escape with only a fright and some talon marks, but sometimes they are driven into the ocean or onto the beach, which is sometimes fatal. This year I have seen two dead Pelicans on the beach. A couple of years ago there were four.
I will try to follow up soon with some more posts showing the single chick that hatched this year. It fledged two weeks ago today, and has put on a good show.
Another Attack. The Pelican was in a steep dive but the Peregrine landed on the Pelican's bill. The Pelican managed to pull out of the dive and survive.

Great set of captures Dave. The background in the second image gives it a surreal feeling.
Thanks for your comment. The background is the evening sky and the distant fog bank over the ocean.
