p.27 #1 · Cobalt Profiles

So many efforts, in the end, we succeeded.

We are proud to announce the incoming HUGE update for the Fuji Film emulation pack.
Our original product was great but with many flaws, the black point, the extreme strength of some film emulations.

Now we fixed that with the incoming version 2.0

The emulation set includes: profiles and presets now.
For every profile we have three possible presets to choose: LINEAR, STANDARD and SRGB
So as usual:

LINEAR (linear info from the sensor with film emulation applied)
STD (full exposure curve and contrast)
(sRGB output) – full exp curve and contrast, plus a complex 3D gamut mapping done in CIECAM02

the latter is :
"sRGB Presets identifying with this suffix point to a profile that contain a special Lut for gamut compression
from ProPhoto to sRGB. The gamut compression was calculated with a particular perceptual intent in
CIECAM02. This is handy for when you need to have a direct output to this space and the photo has out-ofgamut sectors."

Why not any more profiles-only?
because now when you pick the preset you are really choosing a profile and an RGB curve on Lightroom (ACR) to be able to correct black point, white point, etc.!

And , we also improved the quality of our emulations!

Just to be clear Giuseppe,

The reason to pick the sRGB output is when saving the files straight from Lightroom. When exporting a profiled image to another editor, like Photoshop, it's better to choose the larger gamut "STD" output. Correct?

Also, now we can access the profiles from new presets. That's working for the new Fuji "film" profiles but not previous profiles. Are they going to be updated to work as presets as well?

Thanks in advance.
Fred

Hi Fred,

yes, all the "Film" are under revision, first the Kodak one and later Kodachrome.
That has been made just for film cause happens only on that types of emulations the problem with a smaller DR with a capped histogram on white or black point for the specific emulation.
That is now editable using the RGB curve available by preset for a print (where a washed look is easy to be a "more washed" print cause the media conversion) or something else where you need the whole DR.
Just more freedom and a less limited emulation.

We already know as a reference the Velvia is extreme in the standard version ( btw has been edited and improved) but the flexibility of the RGB curves gives more freedom in the editing process.

The sRGB output is "another weapon" to have a clean and already previewed conversion from ProPhoto to sRGB for critical pictures; just select it and go straight to the export in full confidence.

@Ulysseita

I'm a bit confused by what you have posted on your website regarding this Update. You posted above "Now we fixed that with the incoming version 2.0"

On 8/31 you sent an email out, and your website shows update v3.0 was available for previous purchasers to upgrade.

On 9/25 you sent an email out and your website shows update 2.0 was available for previous purchasers to upgrade.

I logged into my account and downloaded the most current version as of 9/25. The File name shows it as V3.0.

And the contents show v3.0 as well but you refer to it above as Version 2.0 and the dates of the files are 8/30/21.

We sell two Fuji emulation set:

1- Fuji Digital (v3.0), the Emulation pack with profiles coming from Fuji Digital cameras (velvia, provia, classic chrome etc).
2- Fuji Film (v2.0), the Emulation pack with profiles coming from real film or slides like Superia, Pro400... etc.

Please check if you are looking for film or digital to avoid any confusion.

p.27 #9 · Cobalt Profiles

Hmm... I'm slightly confused by the new Fuji Film download. I used to import images into LR with a standard Cobalt profile, then in the Profile Browser I might try a number of different profiles that I think will work and go from there. Now there are both Presets and Profiles, and if I use the above method and choose, say, the Fuji Pro160 Std profile, I get a different result than if I choose the Fuji Pro160Std from the Preset dropdown. I assume there are contrast curves that are being applied to the Preset that are no longer being applied to the Profile, is that correct?
Also, there are far more options now. If I first choose the Pro160Std Preset and then I change the Profile to the Superior Std profile, I get a different result than if I chose the Superior Preset originally, presumable because I'm now mixing a contrast preset(Pro 160) with a different color profile (superior). Is my understanding correct, or am I misunderstanding?

Actually, it works this way with any other Profile. If I choose the Fuji Superior 1600 preset, then the curves show a custom profile that remains in place regardless of which other Profiles I choose. So I can have the superior Curves with my Canon Classic 5D standard Profile. Only when I choose a flat curve profile does the image revert to how it used to look.
Perhaps it would be useful to have the different curve profiles imported into the curves dropdown. That way, instead of seeing custom, I'd see Fuji Superior1600 and remember how I got this image to look this way. I can save and rename the different curve profiles, of course.
It's certainly opened up a myriad of options now, and now my problem will be to decide when to stop tinkering.

When you need the Superia 1600, you have to select the right preset now and you can easily fix in your mind to use profiles "just for digital" and not for film.
Film requires preset.

After the selection of the right preset, does not make any sense to change the single profile.
If you want a digital profile it's easy, you reset the curve and change the profile or you go back one step and select the profile.

That is my approach now and is useful, you know why?
Because FILM profiles and DIGITAL profiles have different purposes and a different impact on editing.
The latter are starting point, the Film are more complex with a different white and black point, let's say more evolute and almost final and now having the curves set included spoil that big difference.

Thank you Giuseppe,
I understand what you're saying. Is this clarified somewhere on the website, because honestly, if I hadn't seen Fred's previous post, I wouldn't have seen the presets and would have wondered why the film profiles seem so muted compared to how they were.
As to how to use them, I'm afraid the misuse of technology is a favorite hobby of mine !
The cat is out of the bag, and as a person who never shot film and is just an amateur making pictures that I think are interesting, I'll be mixing and matching and using these new tools in unintended ways.
I hope you don't take this as a negative post, because I think these are great products. Now that I understand the addition of the presets, I do think that they are improved, I just hadn't seen an explanation for how they worked.

Well done Cobalt. Very impressive work.

I've downloaded for 2 cameras, GRiii and Sony a7S3 plus the Kodachrome, Fuji and Monochrome emulations.

Still in the experimentation phase and currently I'm applying the flat Repro curve as a starting point and from there to the emulation and finally tweaking with LR. I'm totally inexperienced with this and would like to hear whether what I'm doing makes sense.

Here's a couple of images:

Thanks for the feedback!!!
We are almost ready on the next Kodak film pack and Kodachrome will be the next!

Starting from the repro it's the best for a full digital post production having the most from our sensors.

@Ulysseita
Hi, I'm quite unexperienced at camera matching. I have a kinda silly question.
If I shoot the same scene at the same time with 2 different cameras (say, a 5DmkIV and a A7RIV), and use the Cobalt Neutral profile on both images to make the starting point of them look pretty much the same in LR, then I make the same adjustments in LR on both images, will they look similar too after making these same adjustments?

Yes, more or less. However, you also have the option (if you purchase the appropriate emulation) to make one camera you are shooting with look like the other...or even like a camera you do not own.

For instance, if you are shooting with a Sony a7Riii and a Fuji XT3, you can make both sets of images look like the XT3, if you have the Fuji Digital Emulation. Or...you could make both look like the output of an M9, if you have the Leica CCD emulation.

The thing that confuses people is that for each camera body you own, you must pruchase the Cobalt base profile for that camera. Once you do, any additional emulations you purchase can be used on ANY camera...so you only need to buy one copy of an emulation.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but is it possible to use these with the iPad version of Lightroom?

Yes, it is (if you have an active subscription). If I remember correctly you need to enable the profiles first in the desktop version. After the regular sync the profiles can be used on the iPad.

Thank you Woody, I’ll be giving them a whirl tomorrow then.
