I had that Nikkor, it was great, now it's very, very old and yeah, it has no AF.
The 35GM is very nice, definitely a worthy competitor, but the Sigma is slightly better (imo and from my significant use of both), much cheaper and made in Japan.
Those are good reasons to purchase and recommend if for me.
As I said, right now the Sigma is half the price of the GM. Almost $900 (USD) is a lot of money, that's another fine sigma art lens in the bag. It's not small enough for me to recommend it at twice the price.
I understand. Strictly from value point it is best to buy a Sigma lens. Optically they are basically the same as Sony GM, but the size is bigger and price point is a lot lower. Especially when I got the 35/1.4DG DN for 500€ used, there is not much point in considering anything else.
My dream lenses would be Voigtländer size and build quality, but with AF. No one makes those so Sigma lenses are the best available option for me.
I switched to Sony because I wanted the 35mm GM, but ended up with this one since I liked the Sigma 85mm DG DN more than the Sony equivalent. Also the Sigma 35 / 85 combo is lighter for both my back and wallet.

Probably a Capture One artifact....seems they are awfully slow with updating with new lenses and likes to set the EXIF tags to lenses it knows about.
I bought a 67mm rectangular lens hood from Haoge and it causes only very slight mechanical vignetting compared to huge vignetting with their 77mm hood on a 85/1.4 DG DN.
The 35/1.4 DG DN just works. I can use it for every situation. Only possible improvement I think would be the same IQ in a smaller and lighter package.

I too prefer the DGDN to GM 85. But I prefer the GM to the DGDN35
The Sigma 85 came out quite a while after the GM85, and Sony have lifted their game in many ways since then. (Though some love the low optical vignetting on the GM 85)
I didn't treat this lens well, it fell to the ground quite a few times and never got decentered ( tested it). This one is built like a tank, wouldn't trade this for a GM unless I'd shoot weddings professionally.
