p.2 #11 · D500 Shooters. What is your next upgrade? | |

As someone who only owns one camera (D500) and primary shoots wildlife and macro, with the occasional portrait, landscape, architecture, etc. I'm curious who else out there has yet to find something worth spending the money on to either replace or supplement the D500 in their bags.
If you're in a similar position, what's your dream upgrade? What is the realistic path forward? Is there anything out on the market now (including recent announcements [ahem Z9...]) that have you interested, money ready, or already purchased/down payment?
I like the idea of having a second camera body, redundancy is good.
But I struggle with determining what would best serve me. This post isn't about diagnosing my clinical indecisiveness. I'm honestly curious how many other people out there only shoot with a D500, and what they feel about the current marketplace.
Personally, I'm waiting regardless of what products are out/being announced right now. Working full time, in grad school, and teaching night classes has me behind a computer 95 hours a week with another 5 hours a week in the classroom, lecturing... I simply don't have time to enjoy my own gear, not to mention learn a new camera's features and layout...
Yes. In my 20-30 minutes of free time today I've decided to peruse FM in hopes of living vicariously through this community of photographers as I gaze infinitely through my monitor trying to see the end of the semester in sight.
Anyways. Hope all of you beautiful people are well and enjoying your gear for than I am at the moment!
If you shoot solely with a D500, or have found a system to compliment the D500, share your thoughts!
I like the idea of FF, I also like the idea of mirrorless. I think I will be treating myself to a graduation present this Fall, will just have to wait and see what is happening/the talk around the industry around October/November!

I shoot birds, animals and landscapes mainly, plus other odds and ends. I have a D500, D850 and a Z7II (and an unsold Z7). So, my primary cameras are the Z7II for +90% of my shooting and the D850 and D500 for my wildlife shooting *if* I require tracking or very fast moving BIF. I am transitioning from DSLR to ML and have sold off all my F mount lenses under my 70-200 except for the 105 f1.4E and 105 f2.8 Micro - my F mount lenses are, 105 f1.4E, 105 f2.8 Micro, 80-400 f4.5-5.6G VR, 400 f2.8E FL VR and 500 f5.6 PF. I have an unsold 70-200 f2.8E FL VR but it is up for sale.
In your case, if you want to transition to ML, and want something to compliment your D500, then a Z7/Z7II would fit the bill and you can use your F mount lenses via and FTZ. It is small and can fit in your camera bag taking up little room. If you want, you can then also transition, like I did, to Z mount lenses and slowly sell off the wider angle F mount lenses and replace them with smaller and better performing Z mount zooms or the better performing primes. You then use your Z7/Z7II for all duties under say 100mm and your D500 for all duties above 100mm, which is what I did for a while, although I was mainly using the D850 and Z7. The Z7/Z7II would be used for landscapes, architecture, portraiture and macro and the D500 for use with wildlife etc. They could cohabitate in the same bag depending on what lenses you have in the bag.
To be honest, I actually use my Z7II and 500 f5.6 PF most of the time when birding and only resort to the D500 or D850 if I am going after fast moving BIF or tracking BIF. Sometimes I will go out with the D500 and 400 f2.8E FL VR or D850 and 400 f2.8E FL VR + 1.4x TCIII.
