With the last two shots, the mighty A1 lost the focus on the osprey as he was diving into the water and the brief moment in the water, it picked the water to focus on but picked out the osprey again after he was airborne. I remember when I met Mark Smith last year he said this happened with the A1 quite a bit for osprey diving. I was using "wide", not tracking AF mode.

I certainly found the A1 to lose focus to the water splash for both osprey and Caspian terns. The good thing about the A1 is that it recovers very quickly as the bird emerges. My R5 and Z9 lost it also and took more effort to recover.
I like tracking down in Wide and then I have a Registered AF Toggle on my REC button to get into Zone to reacquire as it emerges. The birds are slow enough emerging to easily keep the Zone on it for the rest of the flight/shake etc.
Excellent images as always. Now that you have added the 400mm GM to the 600mm GM and have had it for some time, how are you enjoying the 400mm and which of the 2 lenses are you reaching for more?

I think I'm still in the honeymoon period for the 400 so I'm using it most just to keep testing it and seeing how I like it with the TCs. Once the honeymoon is over I think the 600 will still get the majority of work.
Both lenses are just phenomenal without TCs. I think both lose their magic with any TCs involved. That is not saying I won't use them with TCs but picking the lens for 400 or 600 is ideal. Using the 600 to get to 800 is the way to go. 400/2x is way too compromised for AF in my testing so far...same thing I always found with the 2x on the 1200. The IQ in a controlled test is fine...but AF consistency drops too much for my liking.
