Great shots of the Blue Angels and other planes. A1 + 200-600 is the perfect combination. I shot during fleet week a few years ago with the A9 and A7R4. It was great fun!

Yeah, the A1/200-600 is a pretty sweet combo for air shows.
I think I got a little trigger happy though. I thought I was being judicious dropping down to 20fps. And only firing off short bursts. Still walked away with 1000+ images! 😀

Great shots with the background to die for! I agree, the 200-600 is the best lens for airshows. I have used it for many shows since the lens was available. This year I had the 200-600 on one body for the versatility, and the 600 GM+1.4 TC on another body for really close-up shots. I never thought I would use a 600mm prime for airshows. If I could bring only one lens, it would be the 200-600.

The San Francisco Bay is indeed a beautiful backdrop for an air show. I would imagine the Cheasapeake isn’t too shabby either though. 😀
Plus, being so close to D.C., I imagine the variety of aircraft you guys get is pretty impressive as well.

In a "normal" year, there are usually 6-8 airshows headlining the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds within 250 miles from where I live. I honestly don't believe the airshow lineups in our region (Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York) are that much different than those in other parts of the country. We usually have either the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds, the F-22 or the F-35, or the B-2. If we have two stealth jets in the same show, I would consider it a very good lineup. I have seen the B-2 a couple times, the F-22 and the F-35 many times. I like to watch the modern jets, the war birds are cool but my panning skill sucks, not easy to get a sharp picture with the proper propeller motion.
I recently used the 35GM and 16-35GM lenses for low-light hand-held photography, under comparable conditions. The latter lens performed very respectably when wide-open.
Here are four images: the 1st and the 4th were taken with the 35GM, whereas the 2nd and 3rd were taken with the 16-35GM.

Interesting. Sounds like you guys get pretty much the same lineups we get. Except for the B-2. We rarely get to see the bomber over here.
I'm looking forward to shooting with it.
