Love these photos! Such an interesting behavior to win a mate!
Yes, it is a bit bizarre.

Well done Dave, rushing is truly fun to watch!
Bob
It is fun. You need to get down to Hodges.

Cool shots! Can't wait to photograph the Western Grebes here again. They should be migrating up here in another couple of months.
Gordon
I hope you get some good shots, but I don't want our Grebes to migrate.

These are some of the best Grebe-rushing images I have seen! The last one (a photo-finish) is my pick!
Great job, Dave!
Yeah, I like the eye-to-eye shots.

Excellent images, Dave! I love the one where the grebes came or rushed towards you.
Joshua
Yes, I get those sometimes, but not often.

There are a bunch of grebes that hang out in the marsh lands near Oceanside. Our grebes don't start rushing until May in central Oregon. Excellent shots
I hope to see some of your shots in May or June.

Wow, Dave. Outstanding. Love them all. As, I am partial to the synchronized side views, the head on is the most unique.
Rex
Thanks Rex. I like all the angles except going away.

These are marvelous Dave. I do hope the dam issues get corrected. I have visited Hodges numerous time's over the years, I have never managed to get there during mating season I have done a lot of trail running there
Tim
Tim, you need to make another visit with your camera.

Superb Dave.
I hope they can work out what ever is interfering with the nesting
Morris
Thanks Morris. I believe it will require some structural changes at the dam, which will probably take years. Spoke to one of the people working on preserving the Grebe colony and they seemed quite confident the Grebes will adapt. I hope they are right.

Great effort capturing these images - not the usual portrait style shots. Have not seen these birds in the Bay area.
Sunny
Thanks Sunny. I have a zillion Grebe shots and most of them are portraits. Grebes seem to form colonies so you need to find where the local colonies have formed. There must be one somewhere near you. Try eBird. IMO they are great photo subjects.
Simply stunning. Your photos from last year were amazing. These are phenomenal. You are the part of the reason seeing the “Rush” is on my bucket list to see!
I remember your concerns about their nests last year. I sure do hope they can adapt and get some footing on a sustainable future there.

Dave, these are truly stunning !! Love them all but the head on shot is outstanding.
Excellent work.
Birdie
Thanks for your generous comment Birdie. Head-on shots are great, but for some reason I seem to get more butt shots.

Thank you so much for posting.
Best,

Thanks Anita Jo. I recall that last year you were thinking about a trip to photograph the Grebes. That was just before the pandemic hit hard. Maybe later this year or next? When you are making plans let me know and I will give you an update on Lake Hodges.
