This is the first time I tried this. It was a lot of trial and error , out of over 200 shots I got about 5 that I liked.
To answer your question , yes I was rolling the dice for each shot. The trick is the flash. I found that slow sync flash gave the result posted here. I would drop the dice with one hand and press the remote release with the other at the same time. Since the flash fired immediately it froze the falling dice. It also does at flash at the end which helps the dice be a bit in focus at the end of the trail. I had flash on hot shoe , at about 1/64 power. I also had a small led light to the right side that was on constantly to try and light the trails from the slow shutter speed.
With rear sync the dice were in focus at the end of the trail only since the flash only fires once at the end . Here is a link to some I posted on the Sony Forum where you can see the difference between the slow sync and rear sync results.
