Zane, they suck! Can't blur out these things.

Ed, I try to keep things in the colour I remember in my mind. I don't shoot any grey cards or anything but it's just "gut feel" for all my WB corrections. The whole lot of it was lit up under those flood lamps which was quite crappy.

Thanks for all the info. Overall i'm happy with the L lens, the 70-200 was definitely sharper than the wide. I'm still using the 17-85 often, esp when i know i'll never print anything larger than 4x6".

Zane, the contrast and colour from the L lens is definitely better, and i like the f/2.8 of the lens.

Sorry Smelly, but this girl is visibly orange, which isn't very flattering. This is the result of the tungsten hot lights that are pointing down at her. You really should compensate for it.

This is a quick attempt to illustrate the difference. The balance isn't quite correct, but it's close enough.

Hi, My orginal plan tonight was to go shoot some night shots at the Rock pool at Coogee, but every man and his dog was down there even when it went dark.

So I packed up and chose plan B, which was this cool tree lined street in Clovelly called Chesterfield St, which looks spooky at night when lit up.

what time are you guys going to head down for the Anzac day March?

In my experience, the 100-400 is noticeably less sharp than the 24-70. Zane, you should be finding that the 24-70 is just as sharp as the 70-200.

I think the 100-400 is about as sharp as the 28-135. The chart of my zooms is:

24-70 > 100-400 > 20-35 > 28-135
(edit: I realised this doesn't tie in with my statement above. oh well)

Oh, and while the 85 prime is as good as or better than the 24-70, the 50 f/1.8 is not.

Well, I rated them based purely on my experience. I've had the 1-4L longer than the 24-70 and I've been always amazed by the quality of this zoom. Sharpness alone is a lot better than my 28-135, not to mention bokeh, contrast and colour

85 1.8 is great, so bloody sharp wide open

Richard

I like the lock shot a lot and I like this one a lot too

I think you did well in taking many nice shots given an overcast hazy weather condition

Canon USA is offering a $500 rebate for 1d mk2. Why cant canon Aust. do the same ....and offering rebates for various lenses from $15 to $50. If you have friends in the the states it might be a good time to buy.

Has anyone seen WhiBal product. It works in a similar way to grey cards, its designed for white balancing your photos. Follow this link http://www.pictureflow.com/products/whibal/

I wish Canon Aust was offering US$500 rebate. I could be interested!!! but I highly doubt it. I've heard Canon Australia is just a franchise of Canon Japan so it's not really a wholy owned company from Japan so they dictate whatever they like.

I've never really had a problem with WB correction by "gut feel" though I do have a tendency to stray more towards the warmer side than the cooler end of the scale.
