I think I know what you mean,
# 1 he'd just walked out the "facility" door for a smoke.
# 2 honestly I just wanted to get a shot of him for the guy who is leaving.
# 3 I was sitting opposite him as he was talking to my wife I focused and called out to him to get him to look straight at me. Sort of caught mid conversation.
Smelly has his point... however sometimes it's hard to get a good balance between telling a story and having a compositionally pleasing photo...
My suggestion might be
1. Get everything and everyone in one photo with your 24mm
2. Then zoom in and take portraits for individuals like what you did
3. Put all these together on a montage or something
But of course if you intended to take portraits for people only, then you did a perfectly good job...
Just my humble opinion, my event photos are pretty crappy!
Received my EF 300 F4 L and 1.4 x converter on Thursday. Thankfully I know have three days off work to play with it and learn it's quirks. Seems to be fast and the colour looks good in bright sun. Any suggestions on how to use it effectively will be greatfully accepted.
Thanks Zane, I find that I am more interested in portraits than events, Like my landscape stuff, my group photos and photo journalistic stuff really sucks
