p.1 #1 · Mac got Groomed

Decided to get a couple of Godox strobes and start learning to use them with my Sony camera. Got a long way to go (stepping out of my comfort zone), and trying to make the TTL functions work ended with me going manual and digging my light meter out of storage It seems Sony's sync at 1/250 but I slowed the shutter to 1/125 for this and shot at ISO 100 which the meter reported as f/6.3. I had one strobe in front camera right with a 24" octabox and I used a Flashpoint V2 pointed at the ceiling to his right. I just used the curtains as a backdrop, but I'll have to break out the ironed backdrop for the next one.

Anyway, it's always fun to explore using artificial lighting. Especially when Mac is fresh from the groomers!

btw that's a blanket on my pool table that he's sitting on....I'm getting too old to get that low with the camera

Hello, Mac, nice to see you again.

You're a good looking boy and your dad did you justice with his effort.

You did great capturing Mac, Greg!

Yes, TTL features make it easier nowadays. I pulled my flash meter out a few weeks ago and I forgot to remove the battery out years ago and it corroded inside. I don't remember when the last time I used my flash meter, I would say at least 15 years ago... BTW, you could use the flip screen of the camera to compose at a low angle but a pool table did work, too .

Thanks Joshua. Still have to work on a set up for him, but still getting the strobes dialed in. It's been forever since I used my light meter, but luckily, I removed the battery when I put it in storage

I'm actually practicing my lighting because I have a shoot on Sunday. My wife rented a studio space in downtown LA where we'll take some shots of her and one of her stylist friends for their websites and social media. I plan on using one strobe as fill since the space has tons of natural light through some massive windows. I'll post a couple if they come out decent.....

Keep in mind when shooting with off camera flash or strobes, when you lower your shutter speed you are letting in more of the ambient light. The duration of the flash itself tends to be shorter than the time your shutter is open, so adjust your aperture to change how much light you are getting from the flash, and adjust your shutter speeds to change how much ambient you get.

For your dog photo, I would have in theory used the max sync speed to block out as much ambient light as possible, leaving only the light from your flashes. Depending on conditions, you may not have had enough ambient to make a difference here.

For your shoot when you want to supplement the natural light, that will be a good time to adjust your shutter speeds along with adjusting your flash power output to get the right balance.

Thanks for the tips and suggestion. It's been a while for me with the strobes. TTL with a speed light has made me forget a lot about lighting. I used 1/125th here simply as an effort to get more separation between Mac and the drapes behind him by using a faster aperture. For Sunday, I'm hoping to not have to use the strobes at all, but just in case....

Cheers,

Greg

My "son" Rocky had lost sight in 1 eye and hearing in 1 ear. He had many medical problems since a pup. He was one of our "children" not a pet.
He, and his 2 sisters, are in a better place. Everyone has the what is "God's gift to man..or whatever your deity might be, but these creatures are my gift". I hope I can be reunited with them.
Thanks!
Dan
