I like your race photos. To get better shots at slow shutter speeds, you need to follow one spot of the car with your viewfinder. For front shots, choose a small detail at the front of the car, for side views, choose the driver's helmet.
- Align the chosen detail with a focus point in the viewfinder
- Start the movement before you release the shutter
- Shoot a burst of at least 4-5 shots
- Continue the movement till after you have let go of the shutter release
Practice the panning movement. I used to press the elbows towards my body, and I did not use any form of IS. With a 450mm eqv., I could get sharp photos down to 1/15s. At slow shutter speeds like that, you often get opposite panning effects at each end of the car, giving some really cool blurs.
Having recently moved to Olympus and having read comments relating to telephoto lenses, I am debating with myself in regard to keeping both the 300mm f/4 Pro and the 150-400 f/4.5 pro. I think the 150-400 is more versatile, but I really like the smaller form factor and stellar IQ of the 300.
