p.2 #1 · Looking at the Epson P900

Arghhh, now you have me walking around my house with a tape measure seeing where I could shoe-horn a 24 inch printer...

They can be network attached riight?

Yes, they can. Whether you look at Canon or Epson there is a significant leap moving to a 24" or larger printer. There is a real transition beyond a 17"printer; one person can manage moving a 17" printer and most of them fit easily on a desktop. The 24" models weigh in excess of 180#, are better suited for stands, require multiple people to move, and may/may not fit through your doorways. Interestingly, the leap between the 24" and larger printers (44", for example) isn't all that great in terms of size/management as that between the 17" and 24".

When I had several larger printers, I kept a 17" to manage the smaller work. In general, the large printers have a more difficult time managing smaller cut sheets and they are really designed for large roll work. There is little doubt that they can be more economical when printing large or in layouts though I still find myself using my Epson 3880 for many things.

I get what you mean about the large format printers. And as big as 24 is, the ability to print at 44 isn't that much bigger, though a fair amount more expensive. Starting to think that a P900 and then if I catch the big bug, getting a 44, though just outsourcing those prints would probably be smarter.

I'm trying to get into wide-angle immersive photography and using larger prints to draw people into them and my daughter likes macro so the idea of little things printed large. With the macro pictures, I was thinking of being able to hold them and get right up into them.

P900 seem to be out of stock right now. They are the latest and greatest, right?

Well there are several ways to look at it depending on your plans, desires, whether you are printing for commercial purposes or as a hobbyist. Many people start with 13” printers, get bitten by the bug and then buy a 17” version. After framing a few 17” prints or panos, one suddenly wants to print large and 24” or 44” printers become real options. When I used to sell work, 24”x36” seemed the larger end of normal for most clients unless one was looking for a specialty print such as a huge pano or wall hanging. A 44” printer can always print smaller and with layout software it can be quite versatile and economical. If I had to have two printers it would probably be. 17” and a 44” if you have the room and $ for the later.

I crop for the perfect composition so I cut my own window in a mat but size the mat to standard size frames. The latest 24" epson can be wireless. I haven't investigated how reliable it is on large files. I have a cable connection for that reason.

I just bought a P5000 and can't wait to get it on Sunday! I really like papers offered by Breathing Color, and really like roll paper. How does the P5000 compare to the P900?

I used to have an Epson 7900 24" printer, and just didn't have enough room for it in the new house so I sold it. I have used Lightroom for print layouts, do any of you use other software for layouts to maximize paper use?

I'm finished with owning printers. Just not worth the expense or trouble. And mostly have metal or face mounts done by my lab

Tell me about breathing color? I was about to pull the trigger on their river rag whatever and compared the gamut against RedRiver’s PDSGR and was shocked to see how small it is. I didn’t bother with other papers to see how their gamut’s matched up.

I bought their Vibrant Luster and Metallic and love both of them. Their service is very good, I've talked to them several times about different products and they've aways been quick to respond.

I haven't tried their canvas, but I'm looking for a good canvas now. I'm going to check out Red River too.

p.2 #9 · Looking at the Epson P900

I have owned a number of Epson printers: 2000P, R1400, 3800, 3880, P800 and now the P900.

The P900 is fantastic, smaller and quieter than my P800, and with improved image quality, especially with glossy B&W. The internal light in the P900 is also a very welcomed feature.

My only complaint about the P900 is that the feed and exit trays are very flimsy compared to those on the P800. I bet that the P900 exit tray can be easily broken if mishandled. Not a biggie as I am splitting hairs here.

I agree with others that the reviews and other information in this thread have been very helpful.

Bud James

I use 17"x25" all the time for my uncropped 16"x24" images from full frame 35mm cameras. I use Ink Jet Art "Ceramic Luster". With my Epson P800, the Epson Premium Luster profiles work just fine for me. The paper is also very reasonably priced.

It seems that the P900 has been out of stock pretty much everywhere for the past few weeks Any thoughts on why that would be?? It's been long enough that B&H sends me a notice that they aren't in yet and they are still waiting for stock...

Just a guess, but perhaps it's due to supply chain issues like a lot of things since the Covid-19 pandemic started.

That was my first thought, compounded by maybe more people printing during COVID- when printer use was probably trending down. Be interesting to know the bottle neck...

Perhaps it's the chip shortages.

I contacted Epps and and they said that the printer is still in production, just that they are having issues related around Covid and getting the printers shipped and through the ports into the US. No idea or forecast as to when they will be available.

p.2 #16 · Looking at the Epson P900

I had my P900 on order from B&H Photo since it was announced in May 2020. I finally receive it In October 2020.

There is a professional printer supplier in NJ:

Jim Belz
SHADES OF PAPER
Fellowship Industrial Center
717-H Fellowship Road
Mount Laurel, NJ 08054
856-787-9200
[email protected]

They might have stock by now.

I spoke to Jim a few times before when I was considering the P7570 in early 2020. I quickly realized that as a hobbyist, I would never have enough throughput to keep the P7570 happy. I instead opted to replace my P800 with the P900.

With the P800, I could leave it off for months at a time, fire it up, and get a perfect print. I never had any clogging issues with the P800 or the 3880 before it. I expect the P900 to offer similar results.

Bud James

Thanks Bud, love the pics... Jackson Hole and the Tetons are my favorite photo area...

Agree on the 24 inch printers. A lot of commitment for 17 vs 24, and if you are going to go that far, why not 44 inch model...

The P900 seems to be a big step in getting 17 inch printers a bit smaller, It would be interesting to see a 24 inch printer with the same form factor... or a 20inch printer so instead of a 16x24, you could do a 20x30. That would be a lot more surface area

To add insult to injury, Facebook keeps showing me B&H adverts for the P900....

It seems that P800s are in stock, but not 900s...

With 17" roll paper, making a 17x25 or longer is a piece of cake. I use Qimageone to arrange the print on a page and to print. I am a portrait guy so have never done it or panos

Because the 44" is even larger and heavier than the 24" model. For me, having one print dimension being essentially unlimited from the roll-paper media was the clincher. It is indeed a major leap in budget, noise, and floor space versus a 13" sheet feeder:

I'm not a print shop so the motivation is total control and turnaround, not per-print cost. The Pro-2000 has an excellent Wi-Fi implementation (infrastructure or ad hoc) and I fire off jobs from a Macbook in another room. The printer has its own HDD and will queue jobs for immediate action or for later. You can also reprint previous jobs without host interaction—spiffy.
