Good question Scott. I dropped the pin onto my map and tracked my hike. I use the free iPhone app called Pocket Earth for that. Late at night I just track myself back to the pin.
The app is great because I downloaded the entire United States for off line tracking etc. But the app allows you choose each state too, to save on memory. The whole USA is over 3.5GB so quite a bit. That’s why I’ve got my new iPhone 12 with 256GB
Not dropping a pin ahead of a night return means one of three things
a) You have an extraordinary sense of direction.
b) There is a well defined trail to the car that is difficult to miss
c) You are prepared to spend a night outside without a sleeping bag
The color and light treatment of the first two images stands out. Getting to the South end of the Eureka dunes from the Dry Camp is indeed a PITA. There is a dirt road on the East side that runs parallel to the dunes and can shave the hike significantly... Unless you were on the West side
