I saw this bird for the very first time and just for a few seconds in Costa Rica in 2018. It flew away and never to be seen again, much to my chagrin. Fast forward to a trip in late 2019 to Ecuador. When I checked out the patio upon arrival at the second lodge at a lower elevation, I saw a red-faced barbet at a fairly close distance. But my gear wasn’t ready and still had to be unloaded from the car . Of course, the bird flew away shortly thereafter but to my delight it came back. Supposedly, the nest is not that far away. And indeed, I had the opportunity to capture images of the entire red-faced barbet family. And Mrs. red-faced barbet is not red at all, I must add.
