The film was meant to call attention to the pollution from smoke like in a house where smokers are present or the film cars get on the inside windshield from the plastic dash board. The oily residue from wood smoke will collect on the front of a lens and can be difficult to remove.

Ah, okay, I know what you meant now. I believe that residue is tar or of tar varieties. I hope that there won’t be any similar residue buildups from forest/brush fires. But you will never know... Fortunately, we expose our gear for a limited time only.
