I'm hoping it's just a matter of which firmwares they were able to develop and test before announcing the adapter, but we shall see.

B&H needs to clarify their info. The way I read it, AF works with screw drive (no motor) lenses on all E-mount cameras. AF and AE tracking are specific to the A7RIV and A6600.
The LA-EA5 Adapter enables the use of Sony A-mount lenses on E-mount mirrorless camera bodies, and maintains full lens performance, including AF with SSM, SAM, and even AF lenses without an internal motor, as well as relays in-camera corrective features. Maintaining the functionality of both the lens and the camera, this adapter is tested to support phase-detection autofocus in order to provide Real-time Tracking and Eye AF functions, as well as quick continuous shooting up to 11 fps with AF/AE tracking. AF and AE tracking are even supported with lenses lacking an internal motor when working with the Alpha a7R IV and a6600 cameras....Show more →

In anticipation of the adapter I ordered a 24mm f2 ZA (Adorama had a used one for $369, the lowest I’ve seen) and a 100-200mm f4.5 (I had one before and it was bad but I’m optimistic this time).
Another lens to look out for is the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 A mount. For some reason it sells for like $250 max on eBay.
Looks like the 500mm f8 is limited to center point AF for some reason. The monster adapter LA-EA4r that is being developed does not have this limitation for whatever reason.

The Minolta/Sony 500/8 as a mirror lens, can only use center point AF. This goes back to film days. But its a pretty good lens.

Supposedly the Monster Adapter allows full use of the system's AF instead of just the center point. I saw a demo of it somewhere. Also it is not limited to the 6600 & 7IV.
I am 99% certain the limitation to central point AF is a physical limitation of the lens. Because of the way the reflex design, only the central part of the image can be used to focus as the lens can't get portray a solid corrected image to the sensor/AF array.
Both are a step up in quality from other lenses of their era. The 85mm, in particular, is quite special in its rendering and its sharpness.
This.
I used this lens for years. It was ahead of it's time if you look at the fast 85mm's in 2007. It has a great draw--it never got the acclaim it should have as it was for a-mount, not Canikon. It's one of the Zeiss 85mm's that is both AF and has soft bokeh.

2.
Image stabilization cannot be enabled with the 6300.
3.
The original LA-EA4 does not recognize 3x-1x, but the EA4r could be used in MF as well as the EA3.
PS. The 500 REF is not suitable for swinging indoors, so the test will be a weekend.
Hi gigo and everyone:
This is John Zhou, the developer of LA-EA4r, nice to meet you guys
Gary gave me this link, so I could see what you're expecting from it. Thank you all for interested on this. But there's something I should clarify in this post:
1.The reason we pushed back international release is to wait for our local user's feedback. If we think it's good enough with full confidents, we will start shipping, because I don't want get bad reputations from international users. And based on feedbacks so far, there're some bug in it indeed and I'm fixing and testing now. I think it might get solved very soon by firmware v02. Gary is our dealer in US, please contact him for the last updates.
2.Sony made some changes in the v1.2 firmware for A7R4, such as made all focus modes enabled / most AF-S command no respond / AF-C slow on v01 of EA4r. All of these would get fixed in the upcoming LA-EA4r v02 firmware. If you want try this adapter, please use none v1.2 firmware A7R4 (or other cameras) before EA4r v02 is out.
3.the EXIF bug(like 135za 1.8-2.6) will be fixed in the v02 too.
4.More than 10 lenses would be added in v02. Including 80-200HS/17-35f3.5/16 f2.8 fisheye/50 macro(both f3.5 and f2.8)/ 100 macro
5.500f8 Ref lens would get about 80% focus points coverage of full sensor.
At last, I'd love to talk to you guys everyday but I don't have much time to do so(I prefer spending more times on dev)
I have set up a Facebook page and will publish news on that, stay connected guys

I think both those cameras share the same and newest AF module. Maybe there's a technical limitation with older AF modules.

Nice! Are you primarily shooting Fuji-X system still?
Yeah. But now, with the Mino 100/2 back in play, I am really looking to switch back. Timing should be okay for the money, too. I just get all excited thinking about shooting that lens at a good AF speed.

That is pretty amazing. I may pick up another 500/8. Its really good, but definitely not perfect.

It has me excited as well—we should start a doomed 100/2 thread

Did anyone watch the video? Are the sports photos mostly out of focus or is it my imagination?
I watched. It was certainly a good reminder of what a CA machine the 85/1.4 can be.
Some of the sports photos had focus away from the action, which he points out. Otherwise, the 300/2.8 SSM II is a seventeen year-old design with newish coatings and an updated AF system. It's a very even-tempered lens across the frame, the focus transitions are smooth, and the new coatings help it maintain contrast in strong back-lighting, but it doesn't match the resolution of the modern offerings from Canon and Nikon. It'll never match the punch of a 300L II. And the 70-400, at these distances, is in basically the same boat. In MTF terms, they have strong performance in the lower frequencies, but the higher frequencies that give the definition, what I think people call micro-contrast here, aren't that strong. Is that what you're seeing?

So what long A-mount glass should I look for?
Interested in a fast 200mm (like f/2)
400/4
500/4 or f/5.6
anything at 600mm and longer.
No mirror lenses thank you.
I've never paid any attention to A mount glass until now.

Thanks for the back story—I enjoyed reading it.
I never shot the 28/2. I was curious about it, but after shooting the 35/2 and not being crazy about it, I decided to pass on the 28/2 as they looked similar. Things have changed quite a bit with modern optics, in particular below 35mm and wide open performance on fast lenses. Interesting though to hear all that. And the 200/4 never appealed to either.
I have owned the 85 1.4 limited twice. I did some testing comparing it to some classic 85mm’s here:
I personally enjoy the Minolta 85 1.4 ltd as the best 85mm ever made aside from the 75/80 Lux. Not for a technical perspective—it’s does quite well for a legacy 85, but the newest generation of glass trounces it thoroughly.
Except in the smoothness of rendering. The bokeh, and in particular, the transition zone is insanely smooth. Appreciably more than the GM 85 or Samyang 85 MF or Milvus 85 or Canon 85 1.2s (though I don’t know yet about the RF 85 1.2 DO) Of course, this comes at the expense of CA, which the most lenses handle much better, and the 85 Limited has quite a bit. Centrally the 85 ltd is sharp, but it’s not a comparison in the out 1/3 of the frame to modern options. There is a pinch of SA wide open as well, which works synergistically with the smoothness of bokeh and transition and richness of Minolta colors to give a gorgeous and unique rendering IMO. It was distinctly more pleasant than the Mino 85 1.4 D I owned. Like you say, not night and day I would think, but images from the Ltd just sings.
Having said that, the lens is 3k (at least), slow/loud AF, bulky, and not great (though not horrible) to MF. But it’s one the lenses I miss—not as a collector, but just because the images had this unique warmth of color vibrance and smoothness. Interesting you got your hands on one, even then.
Times were so different reading your post! Your impressions are quite excellent with no direct comparison and on film—I wouldn’t recall/know half that as well.
All below are 85 ltd on either an a7 or a7r2–and I already apologize for so many, but perhaps you’ll be interested. ...Show more →
From the samples I've seen, both Minolta 85/1.4 ltd and 100/2 lenses seem to be under-corrected for SA, which is a look I really like, especially for portraits. You don't get that high frequency detail and contrast but in exchange, rendering is smooth and harmonious from the transition zone. I don't feel that lenses like the new Sigma 85/1.4 and Sony FE 135/1.8 share this signature but the Sigma 45/2.8 and FE 85/1.4 GM and many Voigtlander lenses do.
In some ways, the new adapter could be gives us AF options for lenses with different design priorities as an alternative to what's been produced today.
