A link? Its an email confirmation that it shipped. Maybe I should sell this to someone really impatient. Or loan it out. Rent it. Whatever.

Can you include a link? Thanks.

Why not get a used Sigma 135/1.8 E-mount? It has very accurate AF (same as Sony GM) while rendering is also beautiful compared to the Zeiss ZA.

That’s an option too. I have never tried one. I used to have the za and the rendering was amazing. I will look for some samples from the sigma. Thanks, Fred.

Some early heuiristic input:

Hardly any time; testing not in my wheelhouse, but here's the little I got. Two pics, one derived from the other. SOOC, except for sizing.

Couple of simple experience-thoughts:

Don't think you can also use your TC. You can't.
Ain't it nice to get the EXIF stuff with a non-native AF lens?
Hunts a bit more than MC-11/Canon EF did, I think. Slightly worse performance overall in low light, I think.
But, in good light, it's pretty good fun. Looking for more sophisticated/knowledgable info from you all soon!
Outside, I never noticed the screwing noise.
Fast enough for stuff that doesn't need for AF to be super fast.
Keeper, for me...

Good luck, and best to all...

Did you only use a screw drive lens? I use my Sigma 35mm f1.4 often with my LA-EA3, and am hoping I get at least as good performance with the 5 so the 3 can be sold off

I did, though two screw-lenses. A Minolta 50mm f1.7, and the Minolta 200mm f2.8 APO HS.

Good luck!

Looks great Jacques! Was it using Eye-AF?

Yes, sir. It was. Seemed to me to work pretty well. Not A9/100-400GM well, but at or above my naive expectations. Man, am I looking forward to its perusal by you and the other big kids!

Three more shots from late this afternoon. Minimally manipulated...

About 25% of the frame.

Minolta AF 50mm 1.7. About 50% of the frame.

Adapter did arrive today which I was not expecting. Some initial testing shows it works just the same with my SSM lenses as the LA-EA3, meaning I can sell that one off on Ebay to help pay for this.

The only screw driven lens I've tested so far is the 28-70 G. That lens seems to work better in AF-S since it isn't very high contrast and hunts a bit in AF-C. In AF-S the eye AF worked well, it just can't make the same small quick adjustments as an internal motor.

Is it compatible with screw drive and a7iii ? Seems annoying that they only support the a7riv officially? I can’t seem to find compatibility listed anywhere in the simple PDF.

I don't think so. Only the models with the latest AF tracking.

Which I think are only on:
A7riv
A7siii
A7c

Lame. Thanks for the confirmation. And we know they wouldn’t update the firmware on the A7iii or riii because ... sales 😢

I actually think it might be a hardware limitation on the a7iii. I think the AF chip is different.

For the same "sales" reason though, the a7iv will definitely support it.

I took out the adapter and a screw drive 135mm ZA and SSM 35mm f1.4 Sigma this weekend for a portrait session.

Compared to an LA-EA3 with SSM: they are mostly the same except this adapter seems to have a higher max FPS from what I can recall. I didn’t test this. The lack of tripod foot on the 5 is great honestly, the foot got in the way most of the time and was uncomfortable to use. I also think the shutter lag when shooting stopped down is a little faster on the 5 versus the 3, but I didn’t scientifically test. I almost always shot side open on the 3 because of the lag, but on the 5 it seems faster to stop down and the aperture lever is less noisy on the 5. Overall it seems the 5 is at least as good as the 3 operationally, and a bit faster to shoot stopped down and offers a higher burst rate. Not sure I’d replace the 3 with a 5 for SSM lenses only given a 3 is about $130ish versus $250, but it’s nice to see it’s not just exactly the same.

Compared to the 4 with screw drive (135 ZA): this is might and day difference. The accuracy difference is instantly noticeable. The 4 was fine sometimes, but usually not good enough for the 135 ZA wide open and of course you are stuck with like 5 AF points. Now you get excellent AF tracking for most of the frame, and Eye AF to boot which works excellently. I mostly use this lens for long distance landscapes, where marginal AF differences mean the difference between an insanely sharp image and a sharp enough image. This adapter unlocks the full potential of the lens. I’ve kept an a850 in my arsenal because I found it more accurate to focus than the LA-EA4, but this adapter blows that combo away in tracking and overall accuracy. I’d have to imagine the a7r4+LAEA5 combo is better than an a99ii honestly. The 135 ZA focused as quick as it does on any other camera, and with better accuracy than ever. Incredibly impressed. The 5 is cheaper, much smaller, no light loss from SLT, more focus coverage, more accurate, and cheaper! The 4 only has video AF otherwise it loses in every category.

I love this adapter, it has given life to my 135ZA that I never expected it to have. The fact that it can replace the 3 and the 4 functionally is incredibly impressive. Hats off to Sony for this

Since it is the same sensor and processor, I don't think that is possible.

According to this mini-review:
https://tecstaff.jp/2020-11-06_la-ea5-review.html

It only worked with a7RIV and A6600, didn't work e.g. with A7C, A7III, A9. Not sure if there's any plan to support additional models with future firmware updates...

No a7c, huh? Well that sucks. Guess I'll go cancel my order on the la-ea5

I realize this wasn't your point, but there are certainly some differences. The LA-EA3 fails completely with a Sigma 50/1.4 ART - I had mine re-mounted for this reason. The LA-EA5 seems to work just fine with it.

I think my 3 may just get kicked to the curb.

Interesting. Email I got says it will work. Maybe a firmware update will fix it.
