We had a large thunderstorm come through Pullman last night that gave us a nice show. A jog up to the highest hill near our house gave me the following two shots with the canola fields facing west. The second photo, the lightning path through the lower cloud makes this one.
I ended up soaked and am glad the Panasonic S1R lives up to it's water resistance claims!

Nice catch in good composition
Thanks, this is one of the few times I had a good background to work with for a lightning shot.

Lightening looks great but boy I'd love to see a shot with more of the landscape in place. I would normally agree, but in this case the house tops just below the canola field would not look good in the composition.
Nothing says "I'm a hard core photography nut" like seeing an active lightning storm and saying to yourself, "I need to go climb to the top of the nearest hill and stand out in the open to get a great shot!".

Beautiful photos. Congrats.
Yes, my wife is probably thinking this every time I grab the camera and head out when the weather gets bad, lol.

Cool shots, and I always enjoy seeing the Palouse.
I don't remember seeing much lightning during the 4 years I was at WSU, but maybe its just my poor memory (it was in the late "70s after all).
I've been working at Pullman for the past 23 years now and this has been an abnormal year for lightning. For example on May 31st, we had 87,000 lightning strikes in WA state and made the local news!
I'm planning a trip to the area sometime next summer and would love to shoot storms over the lovely terrain. I found a handy lightning climatology database. Well worth a look for any weather nerds out there!

Excellent capture. Of the two I like the first one better; but I clearly understand with lightning strike photos you get what you get
Thanks, yes the clouds in the first one have me, but I still love the lightning strike in the second one.

Thank you. I am missing the storms already... just freezing fog and bone chilling wind these days .
