I am planning to visit VT and Maine this fall if everything goes back to normal by then. This evening I opened up my archive to see few old shots from Vermont and New Hampshire, taken around 2009. It is quite surprising how time flies. Long story short, I processed few of these shots today. These were taken with an old Canon 40D then.
Looking at them make me long to go back there sooner.
I really like some of the compositions, but having lived in upstate NY and VT for 18 years I would love to see them with the saturation dialed down. When the sky is dark and the light is just right you can get some of that almost neon red and orange pop - but even without that mix of light and sky the colors are still wonderful to behold closer to their natural balance.
Composition and exposure look great. But I wonder about the saturation of the monitor you’re adjusting these on, because on my iPad and on my calibrated computer display these all look unnaturally oversaturated.
Back in my film days, I (and a lot of other landscape photographers) liked shooting on Fuji Velvia for the bold saturation and intense colors it provided. But on my displays, these look like even a step beyond Velvia. A bit too much for my taste, though obviously they may look different on your display.
I stood exactly where you were (referring to pictures 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10) in 2017 but your shots look better than mine :-) I wouldn't mind a revisit. New England is da place for fall colors.
Thank you Phil.
I may need to get my monitor calibrated. somehow it does not feel that hot/bad to me.
It may also be my personal liking towards strong colors
Attached is one of the photo directly from the raw without any modification.
Let me know if this looks better.
