Pretty shocking, IMO. So I'm interested in the findings and experiences of the 1 Dx III owners regarding the oil and lube deposits on the sensor reported above. My 1 Dx II was affected, too, though it became somewhat better over time. So what about the 1 Dx III now ? I was hoping that this issue is solved, though. If this in fact is a serious problem again, I'm also interested in your favorite cleaning procedure. Sorry, if this has already has been discussed somewhere.
I have been using mine since Feb 14 (two of them) and have had no oil spot issues at all. In fact I haven't had any dust problems either. At least up to this point they seem like they attract less dust and crud than the mk II.

Thank you for your quick comment. That's good news and encouraging ! I hope that your experience is mirrored by others, too. Of course, you might see some dust spots at f16 depending on the handling and shooting conditions. That's certainly not the usual aperture setting with this camera, though. But extensive oil deposits etc shouldn't happen with this € 7300.- flagship camera, of course.
I have been using mine also since February, no issue. I did one wet clean myself so far and put close to 30k on it. I had some dust but nothing I would not expect. I have mine at CPS for another matter and they will do a sensor clean while it is there. I would not hesitate to buy another one for sure. I am not sure why anyone thinks oil can not get on the sensor, that mirror is moving blazing fast and claim 500,000 life. For a quick clean and good to go again is no big deal. I had three 1dx II's and still have one, clean all three many times without issue. I never found it a sky is falling issue regardless of the cost of the camera.
Use it, enjoy it, clean it, repeat.
For those who can't do it themselves then I do recommend CPS. Never had issue with them.
I have 14000 shots and had some big spots on the sensor with my very first images. I sent it back to CPS for cleaning and within 1 week had 2 big more spots- all visible at F 5.6. I am not sure if it is oil or regular dust spots. Never had this issue with my 1 DX1.
Can those claiming no spots take a photo at f/22 and crank the contrast or dehaze on it and check the upper left corner of your image.
I was blissfully unaware of this problem with my 1DXII but as soon as I did that test I could see all sorts of oil splatter in the upper left. The good thing is for most of us shooting wildlife or sports we are using fairly wide apertures and often cropping the images so this upper left splatter isn't really an issue. It was surely a mess on my 1DXII but never really affected my images.
I'm pretty sure when Pius did that test on the 1DXIII he saw the same sort of splatter as he and I and many others had on their 1DXIIs.
For those reporting a few larger spots those are most likely just the regular dust spots that everyone will get from time to time. I don't think that is any sort of issue with the 1DXIII.
I’ve been using mine mostly with OVF for two months. Early on I did a small aperture yesterday shot and noticed some oil spots in the top left corner. I didn’t notice these at apertures I typically use. I felt I had extensive issues with my 1DX2. I’d estimate 30-40,000 shots on my camera now. I’ve noticed one or two tiny spots that only occasionally seem to cause any issue in the middle of the frame. They’re only noticeable if I’m shooting at f11 or so and if they’re visible, they’re in clean areas and can easily be cloned out. I haven’t cleaned my sensor and don’t feel that I need to currently. I shoot birds with a 600 and various TCs. No landscapes with this camera. The dust issue, especially compared to my headaches with the 1DX2, is a non issue for me.

I agree with most of what you say and have cleaned my 1Dx MKII by myself, too. I can live with the normality of dust, of course. But I respectfully disagree that oil spreads on the sensor is part of that inevitable normality people have to accept, too. Given the recall of the 1 Dx1 and the continuing issues with the 1Dx II, there was hope that Canon would finally find a solution. Anyways, since some are reporting no issues, I hope that I'm lucky with mine expected to arrive next week.

No worries and I hope yours will be without issue. I really think you will enjoy it. In my opinion it is one heck of a camera.

I am sure the issue is a trade off for Canon in that oil allows the fast shutter speeds and long life of the shutter. As a side note, never have experienced it with my high speed Sony cameras (77II, 99II, and A9) but usually have electronic shutter turned on.

There is an oil issue, but it is less than the 1DX2. I have used my 1DX for several sporting events before the shutdown. I have 129000 actuations.

On mine its the top left corner where the problem is, which is the bottom left corner of the sensor.
If you buy a 1dx III you're going to be dealing with oil on the sensor there is no doubt about that.
Not a camera for air-shows or landscapes.
Its not Canon's fault the world oil prices have dropped, they use lots of it...

To move a mirror at 16FPS you better have some serious oil in there. Still, I'm not sure why Canon didn't come up with a solution for this after 3 generations of the issue. The Nikon D5 doesn't show this problem but then again it runs at only a paltry 12FPS.
I guess time will tell if the 14FPS D6 (D5.1) has any such issues.

Depends on what you shoot. For some like me the oil splatter is a non-issue as I'm usually shooting f5.6 or faster for the vast majority of my photos. The upper left corner can be a mess but I'll never notice it.
As a 1DX2 owner the 1DR (or whatever they call it) will be the real upgrade of the 1D series and I assume with no mirror assembly the oil issues will be gone.

+1 ^^^
Canon has continued to have this issue starting with the original 1DX and apparently whatever attempts they might have made has not eliminated the issue for the I, II & III. BTW, when I had it with my ver I (and it was visible at ƒ5.6 & 8.0) the body was sent to CPS twice to be corrected and cleaned. It came back both times with significant splotches still on the sensor. After I personally performed several cleanings they finally were eliminated. A real PITA to deal with.

I also had it on my original 1DX and my 1DXII. Of course for my type of shooting and cropping it never really bothered me at all. But it is not a camera to use for stopped down landscapes where you want to use the entire sensor. That would be a nightmare. However I guess if one was using it for landscapes they could just shoot always on a tripod and use LV e-shutter and maybe then would be able to keep the sensor fairly oil free.
