p.1 #1 · Will Canon or Any Company Release an Olympic Surprise?
Sony and Nikon’s new pro cameras are a done deal as is Canon with a DSLR.
But Canon put a lot of ML tech into the 1Dxmklll. How close is Canon to repackaging that tech plus putting newer tech into a pro body? Now that the olympics have bought Canon another year of R&D time, might it fast-track a pro ML body in time for the rescheduled Olympics?
There was a lot of talk early on that the mklll would never be produced and instead replaced by an R1. In the mklll and in the R5 Canon has shown just how advanced their ML tech has gone by even competing with the Sony a9ll with a camera with a mirror in it.
Could they blend the mklll and R5 tech and take it up another level in a 1 level body before next years Olympics?
In 6 months before an announcement the 1Dxmklll will have pretty much saturated the $6000 market enough to dangle another expensive carrot before the games.
Of course pure speculation and Canon Rumors does not have even a hint of a rumor. Canon certainly has the glass ready.
I think it’s possible, what do you think??

I think all camera manufactures will be taking a big hit with the Covid-19 virus. It will take them months just to get things back moving once things clear up...who knows when. Highly doubt many new things will be released this next year.

You might be right but a lot of what goes into a camera is, I’m guessing, purely computer generated and simulated. Much of that can be done from home, both keeping its engineers employed and moving the company forward.
I have a friend that works for a company as a computer engineer. She works from home 8-12 hours a day, 5-7 days a week developing software. There are maybe 4-5 teams of 5 and those five work as a pod on pieces of the software.
Once a month they meet in person to brainstorm the next pieces. None probably live in the same state and some are in Europe.
In the case of Canon probably only the actual testing and manufacture has to take place in Japan but canon has plants in China too, and China has already turned the corner on Covid.
Of course only Canon knows for sure and it’s cards are obviously well guarded until close to announcement!

My guess is they already have an R1 out there in the field testing and refining. Whether or not they would release it next year is anyone's guess but I don't think they would. Too close to the 1DXIII.
Things (all things) are far from normal from this day forward.

It would certainly be to soon as per the every four year schedule of the 1Dx. I just figured that by a year after the release of the lll those that were gonna buy the lll would already have it and what better way to re-boost sales than introduce a ML!
If there is anything even close to a working prototype out there it would be pretty feasible.

Seeing as the 2020 Tokyo olympics are now the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, maybe they'll be able to release a pro grade R1 for them after all while still spacing out from the 1Dx3

Canon Rumors tweeted that the R1 is coming next year and asked via their tweet how many MPs people would want to see. However, they never posted on their website that rumor so I found that a bit strange??

Before any talk of a pro sports mirrorless camera, I want to see how they added their version of IBIS to the R5. They claim it is a new way of doing it, so it really depends on how well their new technology is received. Once they get the R5 into hands and they see if people are liking the features, then they will add additional features into a pro mirrorless. They also would want to have several big primes available as well and if things are currently shut down, not a whole lot of R&D is being currently done.
Yeah, would be nice, but I don't think it will happen without a huge introduction and success of an R5 in the next 3-4 months.

I would think the sensor would be already developed if the camera is coming out next year. Why would they be asking how many pixels.
Curiosity? Discussion? Just like almost every single thread on this forum. None of us will influence these companies and I don't think CR or any of us on FM has any delusions about that.

Give me a 30MP sensor with everything the 1DXIII offers via LV, dual CFE, throw on a tilt-screen (not the traditional Canon flip screen) and we are good to go for the EOS R1. R5 body with optional grip would be satisfactory although I'd be okay seeing some integrated grip body at a similar size to an R5 with grip (don't need 1DX size).

Ok, I misunderstood your previous post. I thought Canon was asking how many pixels people want.

Up until very recently, Japan has not had the huge issues with the Coronavirus that other populous countries have, so factories and business are still going. That is about to change as numbers of cases of the virus are exploding.
Its just a matter of time before businesses that are not critical infrastructure are shut down. I'm not sure how much design and development can be done from home, but certainly some level of design can be done. Lenses would be harder than cameras, they need powerful computers to simulate the design, and lots of model making.
All of this will almost certainly delay plans for at least a year. Its likely that components for some new models are already in production, but it seems doubtful that enough cameras can be built to have a release. Before a product release, there is also training of sales, service, repair tools and software, none of that is able to happen.

No pro mirrorless body for 2021. This is Canon we're talking about here!
From a business perspective it would make no sense. I do think we'll see the R5, R6 (high MP), and maybe an updated entry level mirrorless body through 2021. My guess is we'll see the R1 before the 2022 games.

What does it matter WHAT version of IBIS the camera has other than it does what it says it will do? I certainly don't need what Sony uses or I would have already gone to Sony and I haven't and WON'T!!!
In the a press release about the R5 it said the R5 with an IS lens in combination with IBIS, if I recall, produced 6 stops. If that works as mentioned then how many stops do we need?
Do you think via the specs we know so far about the R5 that it will NOT be a success?
The current specs in the 1Dxlll are enough to make a successful R1 even if all they do is take out the mirror without adding anything else and certainly Canon would add a lot to the body!

Well.....now that I quit waiting and bought a Canon 7D MkII the MKIII we've all been hoping for will be announced
Let’s make SURE it gets announced, why don’t you buy a second 7Dmkll body!!! LoL
To bad, I had two 7Dmkll cameras and sold them both and bought the 1Dxmkl a few years ago!! Was well worth the trade-up!!
Took me a while to sell the 7’s!

You aren't understanding the marketing language they are using. They claim it is a way fo doing IBIS we haven't seen. is it like their video modes where you just get a cropped image? I want to see how their tech works before putting my eggs into the basket. Also, their claim is that IBIS works with x stops with RF lenses but does it work at all with their EF glass adapted? What if you put EF glass on with IS turned off? there are a LOT of unanswered questions that people need answers for before even thinking about dumping $6,500 on a new R1 series camera.
