p.1 #1 · Sony A7III battery so much better than the A7II?

The specs list the Sony A7III getting 710 shots per battery charge. That is a little over double what the A7II gets from a full battery charge. Is this a real difference in actual use? Does the new NP-FZ100 battery really out perform the older NP-FW50 by that much? How about if shooting tethered will the A7III last twice as long as the A7II?

At least twice as long. No more battery anxiety.

The FZ100 battery is larger and has over double the capacity. Hardly surprising that you get over twice as many shots from a battery that has twice as much energy in it :-)

On an A7R IV I got well over 1000 shots from a single charge. I don't have an A7 III, but I'd expect to get more than the CIPA test number.

It really is that much better. I used to carry three batteries with the A7ii, now I can get away with only one with the A7iii!

(but I still carry two, lol!)

It is way better than the rating suggests.

It holds up much better in cold weather.

It lasts a lot longer in video.

It doesn’t drain when the camera is powered off like the A7RII.

I had 8 or 9 batteries with the A7RII. I bought three with the A7RIII and now IV but I really only need two. I almost never use one battery in a day. It is almost dSLR like.

I felt traumatized by the old batteries. I shudder now that you forced me to remember those days...

Depends on usage.
A gripped A7R2 lasts me one day.

My A9 with a single battery also lasts me one day.

You need to understand your usage but yes, the newer batteries have much more longevity.

Yes they’re much better. I miss them from my R3 now that I have the R2 but that’s okay. Since I have to hike with 15 extra batteries, I can use them as breadcrumbs if I ever get lost 😊😊

I was perplexed when my used A7RII came with 6 batteries, but they quickly proved indispensable. Since upgrading to the A7RIII, I haven't had to give the battery much thought. I shot an entire wedding with a single battery, and only threw it on a charge for 15 minutes during some downtime. Approximately 900 pictures and the battery was still at 25%.

Thanks guys, I am guessing based on the replies, especially the one referring to video recording time improvement, that tethered shooting would see the same improvement. Though, too bad Sony does not offer the option of switching off the camera's screen when tethered. That would have increased battery life regardless of battery type.

I can probably photograph almost two events on an A7RIII battery, can probably barely get through one event on an RII battery. Really depends on how many pictures I take, but yes the RIII batteries hold a charge better.

When I shot the a7rii, it wasn’t uncommon for me to use three batteries in a shooting day. Chargers were a huge deal and i usually had one plugged in in my jeep.
The newer battery is twice the capacity and I don’t think I’ve used more than 1.5 in a day. It’s definitely a relief not to worry about batteries (I still have six, for when I’m off grid, but have never gone through them all).

When I tether the camera to a laptop (using C1 Pro), the battery doesn't go down at all as it's being charged while it's connected.

Same for me. When I switched to the A7Riii bodies, I bought battery grips for both of them (because of the experience with the older/smaller batteries). But it really wasn't necessary; only once or twice over two years did it actually get through the first battery and switch to the second during a single day of shooting. (still love the functionality of the grip though.)

Interesting, I never had this happen when I tested the A7Ri tethered. I guess the new battery is so big that it will last the whole day with the small trickle coming from the laptop.

I think charging via USB first appeared on the A7r ii or was it iii.

Either way, both the A7riii and the A9 I have charge while tethered so if your laptop is plugged in, you don't need to worry about camera battery etc when it's connected by the usb cable. Just make sure it's a good quality cable otherwise you can get disconnects, especially using 3m+ cables etc.

2280mah (mIII) vs 1020mah (mII).

The II's have USB charging, but not powered tether (it either charged or tethered). IIRC it's the III's that got the ability to run off USB power while tethered.
