p.1 #1 · Newfoundland Foster Puppies at 10 weeks: Update

Congratulations to John Caldwell for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 2 votes - View Previous Winners

Some may recall that we are for the first time fostering two Newfoundland puppies. The dogs are now nearly 10 weeks old, having come to us at 5 weeks. We've also had the chance to be with four litter mates. Emotions are mixed as this chapter will soon close for my wife and me, but will in turn open for forever home families. The fostering experience has left a mark on us.

Beautiful pups and your photos really capture that. Looking at your photos I wouldn't think it would take long for them to find the right match for their forever homes. Very nicely done.

This is just lovely puppy portraiture. The rim light and shallow DOF adds so much to the mood of the photos.

bruce

Well John you did it again. Stunning images, simply stunning! Showed them to my wife and it only took one picture for her to say, "can we get one?" Thank you for setting the standard for fostering these beautiful puppies. I can feel your heartstrings being tugged a bit.
All the best to you and your wife in the new year!

Right. While I've personally seen only 6 of the 13 puppies, it does appear that that are very likely pure-breed, or purpose-bred, Newfoundlands. As we understand it, only one of the puppies may have a physical limitation visible t the time, and for this reason, we've felt their placement would not be difficult. Indeed, Newfoundland Rescue, has more applications for adoption than their are puppies available.

This aspect has made me wince to think how that process play out differently with litters - dogs, cats, otherwise- of species or breeds not in demand. It's a solemn thought.

Thanks for your interest,

John-

Thank you. When the light is decent, pretty photos are easy to take with these puppies.

John,
All my children were pure breed cocker spaniels from AKC registered breeders. Lily, our last child, was flown in from Minnesota because there were no pure breeds available for long periods of time. Which was nice to know but we had to wait a long time.
I am afraid there are too many "children" that go unclaimed and I shudder to think what becomes of them.

A mix of lenses likely as these are different shoots. The Puppy in Sweater shots were taken with the Canon 200-400, while the others were a mix of the Canon 70-2000 and 135/2.

If you happen to not have lenses this expensive it doesn't matter. After shooting dogs for some years now, I believe the most important image factors are:

1) Camera at, or near, sometimes below - dog's eye level. Probably everyone of these images were taken as I was prone on the ground surface.

2) Watch the backgrounds. Separate the dogs from the stuff you want to render in blur. While it's true that shooting at f2.0 makes this easier, you can still get grand separation at smaller apertures if the BG is clear.

3) Backlight, particularly when dappled or filtered through the landscape, can be nice.

4) Don't shoot too tight.

5) Portraits will sometime be more interesting if you, or an assistant, has a rapport with the dog. Even if the dog is a stranger to your and you to him, your making mouth noises, or using devices like game hunter's calls, can create engagement.

Thanks for your interest,

John-

Only one of the pictured puppies are female. She is the brown lying on the ground, chin squarely in the snow. Of the 6 puppies we've spent time with, she is notably the most independent. The foster family calls her L.C., after Lewis and Clark.

We fear the puppies may leave us soon. Being honest, this has been an emotional exercise, as attachments form quickly once the creatures enter this phase of life, where personalities emerge so clearly.

Thank you,

John-

Thank you for this kind sentiment. As I know you are devoted to your retriever family, and you work hard at photographing the relievers so beautifully, I have no doubt you understand this process. We'll not forget this chapter.

Thank you for your observations.
